Well after breaking my elbow in a drop at WKRP, I got another bashing at Scoot A Que this year.

One road we went down had intermittent patches of gravel where the road had been patched. I made a rookie mistake and looked down at one of them instead of looking through the turn. I bounced across a little ditch and into someone's yard. The ditch was just a real small depression. Not really a ditch.

Luckily the drop was on grass and I'd put a set of crash bars on the Saturday before. Not a scratch on the bike that couldn't be buffed out. Just a little mark underneath that I could almost wash off.

But I must have really banged my leg and knee on something. Probably the seat. Doesn't hurt too bad but really looks ugly.

Be careful out there !

Hey Dutch, so glad that you didn't hurt yourself even worse. Ice is good but try to avoid anti-inflammatories such as ASA or ibuprofen for now as the bruising can be made worse early on if you use them. They decrease platelet adhesion which can then make your blood a bit "thinner" and increase the bruising or hematoma formation.

I concur with Benito's expert diagnosis, and also add that creamsicles - taken orally as symptoms persist can help reduce fatigue and cottonmouth.

I'm sure it's a lot worse than normal because I take a baby aspirin every day per doctor's orders.

Like I said it doesn't hurt too much and I'm sure it'll be a lot better in a couple of days.

I've got 6 soccer matches to referee this week so that'll keep my leg loose.

I'd like to get my name off the rally list as designated crasher.

Maybe I just need to become a better rider.

Another rider was riding home in the rain on Sunday when she stopped for a red light and put her foot down on the white line. Down she went and now has a broken foot. She's got over 13,000 miles on this scooter so she's an experienced rider.

Happens to the best of us. A friend of mine who has been riding for 44 years (and uncountable miles) did almost the same thing a couple of months ago ... he put his foot down in mud and down he went. Broke his hip when he went down and a pulled groin to boot! He did it on his 60th birthday in northern Ontario.

Unfortunately, he has had to have a hip replacement as a result and is just beginning to recover.

I kept trying to think of a clever nickname that I could use for someone who has laid his scooter down, but the only thing I could come up with was "Dumb Ass".

I've got to get the rally by-laws changed so I'm not the designated crasher.

Ooh Time lapse.. sure thing

I did talk to my doctor today. He took a look and said the aspirin was certainly a contributing factor to the size of the bruise.

He said to watch it and if I get any pain in my leg to see him immediately. I've had a clot in my leg so I know what that feels like.

What a bruise! Criminey that looks like it hurts, but I'm glad that it doesn't!
If you can, take some Arnica - you can get it in tiny pill form or a gel at your local health food store. It really helps recovery time of bruises and helps with muscle pain. When I had my skin cancer surgery, the doc said specifically to take the Arnica orally to help reduce swelling and bruising. We also keep some in gel form for the bumps and muscle pain that one gets trying to keep up with our six-year-old!

Take care of yourself first, then the scoot!

Holy crap Dutch, that leg looks awful! Definitely keep it loose and watch out for leg pain that might be a clot-especially with your history.

I will second your motion to be removed from the role of designated rally crasher, but I am not willing to fulfil that vacancy myself.

Hugs!

Too bad. Hey, we all make mistakes, but still you have to notice the road conditions too (which you were doing). I've been nearly thrown by getting up against an asphalt patch before. We just have to notice so much and take it all in continually. Glad you didn't get really messed up, but that's a bitchin bruise. I'd wear shorts all the time if I had one like that!

On a different thread there's a story about 26 motorcycles going down and I thought when I saw that about the real possibility that something like that could happen at a scooter rally. My first rally had maybe 100 scooters and we were riding pretty fast in staggered formation down around New Braunfels, TX along the Guadalupe River. I recall thinking that if someone went down at the wrong time, it'd be something else. I've seen that on a bicycle ride before at a railroad crossing.

Hey +1 on the arnica! I should have brought some to prom but didn't even think about it. I have a genetic connective tissue disorder and we bruise very easily, I use arnica all the time. They carry it at Whole Foods. Let me know if you can't find any down in your area and I will get ahold of some and mail it to you. It smells and feels a bit like a muscle rub, but it works miracles on bruises.

I rode the route earlier this summer and they had not gravelled (is that really a word?!?!) the road at that point. I hope maybe next year the route will be a bit cleaner. Unfortunately, this year in Ohio (and I would bet other states) finding a road that is not participating in stimulus funded maintenance would likely be impossible.
