Maybe Jimmy will store it for me 8) until I can get out there to crate and ship the thing.

I bet a dollar and a slice of ham that it's already sold.

Ok... that's a good deal IF it is complete. And IF the paint job is of good quality, and done right.

A big lesson for vintage scooter buyers : the little stuff ( particularly on a rare model that they don't repop parts for ) will cost you the most.

Bikes in a box, where you really can't see what nuts and bolts are missing, what still has to be purchased, etc ... you think "Ohh! the cowls are there! The fork is there!" and then later you realize you're missing all the small stuff and it's going to cost you another few hundred bucks to source out those bits.

And that's on a bike where you can actually FIND those bits.

Not saying this bike isn't 100% complete... just saying that's a REALLY hard thing to estimate when you're looking at a few photos in a craigslist advert. You can't go back to the seller after the fact and say "WTF - where's the taillight lens!?!"

So true. I've bought a bike in a box before, which was advertised as "complete." $800 in parts later it really was complete.

Even if he had to spend a 1000 on extra parts...that's 3k for a SS180 that is ready to ride...still not bad at all.

i agree. even if he spends 2000, he still has equity. in a hobby where most of the bikes are not worth anywhere near what the people are putting into them, this is an exception.

If i had to choose betwixt the two, i'd pick an SS180.

But it would depend on the condition of each. They are both good bikes to own... but the SS180 is a bit more formidable.

i agree with eric. the SS180 is the better choice. there is an exception in the rovers. there is a Cushman GS 150 in his club. the rarity/scarcity alone will make that bike worth a lot of money in the future. eric can tell you the production number. i thought it was under 400.

I had heard that too ...but it seems like other every damn VS5 i see coming up for sale lately is a Cushman one. I can't make heads or tails of it... whether it's a coincidence or if there's more than we previously thought.

Still, Tater's Cushman VS5 is in really, really nice original condition... with all period Ulma accessories on it.

He paid like 2700 for it ...and at the time i told him i thought it was worth 2x that.

I just think it's harder to sell a GS150 VS5 than it is a SS180 ...because the SS is a bit more practical.

agreed. people want the same few bikes the GS160, SS180, SS90, Rally180/200 (there are others, but that is not the point). those are the few vespas in the hobby that you will actually get your money back out of a restoration. you could probably argue that unless you get most any other vespa in the whole hobby for free, fiscally they are not worth the money to restore and you have to decide that you are doing it out of the love of the hobby.

and i mean a full resto like eric did. dipping, body work, period correct paint, sourcing and buying missing and worn bits, repairing and refurbishing original pieces, uphoulstry... that is not a cheap proposition. only some bikes justify that money.

In my experience in searching for a ss180, I tried to stay away from one that wasn't mostly complete due to the hard to find and expensive parts. It seemed like it would be a money trap. The one I have now was 100% complete when I bought it minus the glovebox and steering column keys (I still need to figure that out). Of course, I didn't pay $900 for it either but I did get a reasonable deal for it. To me it was worth the investment.

With other more common models, I think the bike in the box approach would be easier. Just my opinion. I had a Rally 200 in a box that I put together fine. However it wasn't period specific with all the parts. That was ok. It was kind of a rat bike for me and I enjoyed riding her around. To me, the ss180 deserves the attention to detail like Eric put into his. I'm not saying don't buy this one but one has to count the cost before jumping in.

My bad. Sorry I didn't read the ad all the way. I didn't realize the engine could be included with the deal too. I misunderstood thinking that it was just the body and that you would have to hunt down an engine.

Best of success if you get it. The ss really is a classy scoot and worth the effort.

Hey Jimmy no answer also and I actually plan to rebuild & ride it. For me it's a keeper and I would not sell it.
