I was just thinking about something like this yesterday. Essentially, since their reintroduction to the States, Vespa has introduced three new model Ranges: The ET range, the LX Range, and the GT Range. All other scooters so far have been variations on those three themes. From the LX Range we get the LX, the LXV and the Vespa S, from the GT Range we got the GT200, GTS250ie, GT60, GTV, and now the GTS300 Super.
What might be the next really new scooter from Vespa? A newly built bike with removable cowls modeled after a Rally? A new smallframe modeled on the SS90? Or will they make an entirely new scoot altogether, like they once did with the Cosa?
In one sense, by making every bike throwback to retro styling, their future bike iterations would appear to be limited by past models. I have to say though, Piaggio is nothing if not ingenious... how many other companies have been in business continuously since the late 1800's?
It may be that the Piaggio line is where they're going to be pushing the envelope, while the Vespa line will continue to offer minor cosmetic changes, color changes, and ever more powerful engines in the same body styles, much like the Sprint - Rally - SS180's of the past. Many of those scoots have more chassis similarities than differences.
Changes I'd like to see: upgraded suspension, really great all-day saddles, good looking and well designed throaty exhaust in a stainless steel, alloy wheels, all available as OEM upgrades, and the spring rack back as a standard feature on the rear.
