This past weekend, I was riding in the town where I live and on a not so busy street, the police had one of those mahcines that show you your speed ( I love those things...but, they make me want to speed up, not slow down...I like to make them turn red and blink when you pass the legal speed limit on the street). Anyway, after two or three tries because cars were by my side, I finally went without any car near me and while doing 60 indicated, the machine read 55 MPH...which is about right...supposed to be about 10% from what I have heard...you mean that when I had it pegged one day at 90, I was only really doing 81 MPH???

Correct.

Either use a cycle 'computer' (cheap) or GPS (not so cheap) to determine your real speed and calibrate your speedo - if you can be bothered that is.

Yes. That's about right. Unmodified on a flat run, the GTS will hit about 81.

Downhill is another story.
