In the Cannon Ball writeup someone mentioned making a "field expedient" tool for adjusting the idle using a small copper tube, like icemaker tubing. I assume that the end was deformed to a "D" shape somehow. Could someone give a little more detail on that little tool making exercise?

Thanks

Wouldn't that be for the mixture, rather than the idle?

I'm pretty sure that is what he means. I, too, would like more info, though. I've seen several posts mention using "flattened" or "squished" tubing. I'd like to know what size tubing and how to "squish" it.

If you pull the screw out, you can put a small tube over the end and tap the flat side until it forms to the "D" shape. I use a tool made this way and it's great!

I have to wonder why the US 'authorities' mandate that this adjustment should only be made with a special tool. Barking mad.

So... How does one "pull the screw out" without having the tool in the first place?

I bought the $19.95 tool from Motorsport, but it wouldn't be hard at all to make your own. You could get a pattern for the tubing size and the shape to bend it to by just pressing a piece of plasticine modeling clay over the adjustment screw to get an impression.

Hobby shops sell short lengths of thin-wall brass tubing for model building in many diameters. It would be perfect for making a tool.

I thought someone might ask. Its not tough with the carb out using a pair of needlenose pliers, being careful not to damage the brass screw.

Sounds like the best option might just be to drop the 20 bucks for the Motorsport one.
