Don't want to start a war but is one really better in some way than the other? I know from personal experience that anything can be cut, chopped or broken, so of the available choices, what does everyone use. Thanks, Philip

I have a kryptonite chain lock,
But I only use it if my scooter is going to be stationary for a few days,
It'll also be locked to my kryptonite anchor on my front lawn.

The only problem with the chain is that it's difficult to get it through the front wheel,
I imagine a cable would be a lot easier, But not as secure for long stays in a spot.

I agree on the street cuffs, Not very user friendly and hard to find a good spot to lock onto. I got them on ebay when I owned my 1st Harley and hardly use any lock at all.

I use a xena alarmed disc brake. I can attest that it is (a) loud and (b) touchy. I have no clue as to its actual lock quality, since it's never been attacked that I know of. I don't lock my scoot down, as there's no real anchor anywhere (I'm considering installing an anchor in the street or sidewalk, but that's probably illegal even though I do own my sidewalk.

I'm sure you've predicted the pissing war about all sorts of counter-measures...audible, tracking, physical, different flavors of physical, psychological, zen, , etc.

Use at least one. Is one better than the other? Yeah. The one that's actually being used is the best one for sure. Even if its actual physical deterrence isn't that great. Consistency is the single largest factor you have control over. So, use one that will absolutely positively be on your scooter any time your butt isn't planted on the seat. If it can be physically robust...then all the better.

I use a chain that I can have on and off in less than 40 seconds in any scenario, from the time I turn off my ignition to the time I'm walking away from my scoot with helmet stowed and bike locked. It's thick enough to be tough, but thin enough to fit through the spokes of my scoot. (I found with the LX, 10mm thick chain is all it can take before it gets to be a hassle fitting it between the spokes & the brake disk). My particular chain is a "noose"variant that allows quite a few locking methods.

Don't use a cable, they are embarrassingly easy to cut. At least with a chain they will struggle a little.

Use a chain and a disc lock/u lock. The immobiliser is pretty good on the Vespa.

Then chill. You have insurance!

The only problem with the immobiliser is that the average thief doesn't know about it until they have your scooter in their possession and try to start it.

The immobilser has certainly saved mine a few times when locks and chains did not.

Sure if it is put into a van, there's not much to be done. Scooter thieves in London tend to work on the spot and that's what I protect for.

I just use a small disk lock. As Wonder Machine says it won't stop anyone from picking the scoot up and putting it in a van but they know they'll have to grind the lock of and that will most likely damage the front disk. I don't think it would be worth the hassle to them. I used to use alarms on bigger bikes but found that more often than not they'd drain the battery and I'd be left with a dead bike. I've heard that U-Locks tend to be beaten by special freeze sprays and most cables can be cut.

Your best protection is to get a bright pink scooter and no-one (male) will touch it

WONDER the cable lock that i use has an ear piecing noise when cut. I accidentally breached it one day and had all my neighbors outside looking to see what the hell was going on In the end if you really want something it can be taken quite easily.

Agreed.

I approve of alarmed stuff, but cable by itself? Nooo. Some little scrote would have it in seconds here.

There is also a cover alarm that you can buy,
It's activated when someone attempts to remove your scooter cover.

Very simple and effective design,
Difficult to turn off though, You need to get out of bed to turn it off.

Saw it at Kneedraggers

Bigfoot: will that alarm only work with a cover? Could you fashion it to work without one?
