I took a little jaunt about forty miles from my house today with just a little over half a tank of gas. I wasn't very concerned as I figured I would gas up on the way back. I went for my wallet and then realized I had left it at home.

I always keep $5 in the glove box for that same reason. I have forgotten my wallet on some occasions.

Stashed cash is a must. I got close to running out, didn't have any cash on me, and their credit card system was down. No where to go, had to wait what felt like forever for it to come back up.

Every time I gas up and get change I stash it either in a jacket pocket or in my scooter medical kit or in the topcase. I actually have to go through from time to time and harvest the excess money. Always knowing where there are a few extra dollars around the scooter is really comforting.

Thanks for the reminder. 8) You ever have one of those days when you are running on fumes and you pull into the gas station...and their card readers are not working? ![]() |

It is also a great feeling to be able to help out a fellow scooterist when they realise the card reader is not working and they are miles from home, but you whip out a couple of $1s and save the day!

I just always carry my wallet. Always, without fail, to the extent I feel naked without it.

I seem to know several scooting friends who never seem to carry cash. I always carry cash at least a little. Three times I have had the pleasure of putting $5 in a friends tank when the credit card line was down. They all haveremembered, and my coffee has been purchased in return several times, but two of them still don't carry cash. Heck I will carry a quart of gas in a camping bottle when I'm headed out to the hills. A quart makes all the difference sometimes. R

I had a similar situation - I was carrying my wallet in my back pocket, and it slipped out somewhere along a 20 mile twisty road. I didn't notice until I stopped for gas at the bottom of the hill - no wallet. Luckily I had some loose change in my pocket, and that bought me enough gas to get me to my parents' house.
Since then, I always put my wallet in the pet carrier (usually in a messenger bag). I'm also glad that $1.25's worth of gas can really have an impact on a Vespa's gas tank. $5.00 in the glove compartment is a good idea also. Thanks for the tip. -- Richard |

Great idea about the $. Before gas prices went up and all the stations started wanting you prepay, I put loose change in an altoids tin and kept that in my pocket, so I'd fill up, then go in and pay in change. It was sort of funny. I kept the tin because it was in my pocket during a crash and it sort of formed on the back of it to my leg muscle. Scootering memorabilia...
I also have a money belt that I bought at REI a few years back and they don't carry them anymore. The buckle broke, so I took it to a local shoe shop who was able to replace the buckle. Just another thought for if you need to carry some larger bills around. |

I also keep a few dollars worth of quarters in my scooter. Seems like the battery in my cell phone is always dead - if I remember to bring it. Haven't needed it yet. A good thing because a pay phone is hard to find these days.

Great idea, although I might need to tape it to the inside of one of the kneepads so I *sort of* forget about it and don't spend it on routine stuff!!!

I keep 10 in each scooter and the car. Not only for gas but in case i want something and have forgotten my wallet. I am lucky that most businesses know me and i've paid later on a few things. Living in a small community where people know you is good Also help out folks who needed gas or a drink at times. I won't comment on the clean underwear parents used to nag about tho

We try to keep loose change in the car and the scooter but with two school aged kids you inevitably get the last minute "I need $ for school today...we're going to the museum..."

I am a mother of an 11 year old and a 14 year old, but the emergency gas money is ONLY ever for emergencies. Period, no discussion, no way no how. It is often in the form of change that is too much of a pain in the butt to sit and count out for anything short of an emergency and if someone is so desperate to need my emergency gas money that they will mug me for it, all they have to do is ask and they can have it.
"Emergency" lunch money is easier found in the clothes dryer lint trap anyway-thats usually bills, or go digging for quarters in the mason jar in the bathroom cabinet, last resort would be to go hunting through the pockets of the dirty laundry and hope my son didn't have gym the day before... My VW has a distressingly accurate gas gauge-I learned the hard way that when it says empty, it is not kidding. I have been saved twice by good samaritans that were total strangers (one that gave me a couple of dollars worth of gas when I was at the gas station the day before payday and totally broke with my tank on fumes and the second time when a guy stopped and took my gas can and my $2 to the gas station, filled it and brought it back to me.) I am just paying it back. Getting stuck sucks, big time, and if there is some little thing that I can do to help someone else, just the boost to my day when I can help someone else is worth it. As far as someone stealing your scooter and getting the keys, would they also deny the claim if someone broke in to your home, stole the keys to your car and went for a joyride? Theft is theft! I don't understand that at all. There are lots of ways to get someone's keys without their authorization-stealing the keys is not securing authorization to use a vehicle any more than stealing my credit card gives a thief authorization to go out and run it up to my limit. -v |
