I have a 2010 Vespa GTS 300ie... You know how you have to press one of the brake handles in order to start? Is it possible to bypass this system and start the bike? I had my left brake sensor go out and now I can only start with the right brake pressed.

The dealer said they would have to replace the left brake sensor. I would like to wait until the first service is due and get everything check at once.

Just would like to know in case the right brake sensor fails.

Thanks...

This is actually a safety issue. Although unlikely, it is possible for an engine to rev high enough to engage the clutch upon starting, causing the bike to jump forward, with possible damage resulting. It is unusual for these sensors to fail, so I wouldn't worry too much about both going bad in the same bike. You'll be fine for 600 miles for sure.

Now down to business:

You've got that question all wrong. It should read either:

1) Break bypass sensor for starting? (I'm not sure why you would want to break a perfectly good bypass sensor)

or

2) Bypass brake sensor for starting?

Aside from the safety issues and the spelling police, most sensors are a switch of some sorts. I've not looked carefully at the electrical diagram, but a switch is typically either normally open, or normally closed. Engaging the brake lever either breaks a connection on a normally closed circuit, or closes a connection on a normally open circuit.

Once you determine which the circuit normally is, you can either install a manual switch, or just cut the wires to the switch and solder them together for a temporary fix. That said, you might just be better off getting the sensor(s) repaired the next time you take the scooter in for any work if it's still under warranty.

It's not a brake sensor - it's a brake light switch. If the engine doesn't start using it, then you aren't lighting up the brake light either - and that is a very dangerous thing to have happen. Replace that switch ASAP (it's very cheap) before you get rear-ended!

Perhaps it is sticking and intermittently malfunctioning. I would still have it fixed by the dealership. You don't want to take a chance with it not activating your brake light when you use it.

So Jim...
Will an ET/LX still start if the rear brake light fails using the electric starter? So I would have to use kick start until replaced bulb.

Or what you are saying is that the 'unit' does the brake light/start switch et al so don't be a plonker and take it apart and play with it?

Cheers

None of the above - I don't think you have grasped what the circuit is.

There is a switch on the brake-lever to turn on the brake light. This switch also enables the starter relay when the starter button is pressed. If the bike won't start when the brake lever is depressed then the brake light won't work either.

It has nothing to do with the lamp in the brake light, except that normally that will light if not blown - but that is a very rare occurrence, and I don't know why that is even being raised. If the lamp is blown but the switch still works then the bike will still start on the electric starter - but you check your brake lights, right?
