Modern Vespa

Hey folks,

I was coasting down a hill yesterday and, after hearing a very loud "pop" that sounded like a firecracker going off in the exhaust, my GTS died--the engine just up and quit. BUT, after throwing the kill switch on and off, turning the key to the left and then back to the right, and then hitting the ignition, it started up and ran fine all the way home.

Any ideas what the popping sound was? It was NOT the normal backfire/exhaust pop--I know what that sounds like, and this was much, much louder, almost like something electrical was blowing up.

Have you overfilled the gas tank in the last week or so?

I don't think so, but maybe? Last time I filled up I used the same technique I always use (handle over the pet carrier with the auto-shut-off on) and don't think any gas spilled over. If some did, what problem could it have caused?

The evap system in the NA GTS would allow overfilled gasoline to get soaked into the air filter. This can starve the engine of needed air and cause it to shut down temporarily or longer depending on the amount of gasoline overfilled.
