Good morning, and thank you for any interest you have in helping me with this quesiton.
I've got about 3000 miles on my GTV......love it, ride it as much as I can everyday.......did not like the looks of the chrome kit when I first bought my scooter, but have been thinking lately, maybe I should put it on.....( I do have it on the front ), but not the back, and have been thinking, will it really help me if the scooter is dropped or goes down. Can anyone give their insights and thoughts.....thanks again, Bob Grenier.....

I put a set of FACO bars on the back of my scooter 2 weeks ago. I dropped it the next Saturday. Not a scratch on it. I think I bent one of the brackets holding the kit on as it's a little further from the cowl than the opposite bar. I'll take it off when I get a minute and try to bend it back.

Welcome to MV Bob and feel free to ignore T5bitsa69. He has a thing about chrome on scooters.

I have the chrome kit and can tell you it is worth it's weight in gold. I had a wee accident last Christmas and aside from damage to the chrome and a few paint scratches, a broken brake handle, a ripped handle grip and some bruised pride ... my scooter and I both came through without a single ding or dent anywhere! I can highly recommend it!

Bob I have had rear crash bars on my GT 200, my old GTS 250 and now my GTS 300. I can tell you with great certainty based on my firsthand experience that they do work to keep your scooter's lovely rear cowls safe and pretty. I have seen car door swung open hitting the bars without damage to my GT200's rear cowls. I have witnessed cars trying to push my GTS out of its parking space on a street, nudging the rear crash bars. I ran out of the store I was in to yell at that bastard. And finally and quite unfortunately, I had an accident last year in the rain going over train tracks when I high sided on my GTS. My GTS slammed down on its right side on the road and I landed with enough force chest down onto my scooter to fracture a rib that is hard to fracture (id the second rib is quite short and strong and isn't easy to fracture). My GTS on its side with my weight slammed into it and the right rear cowl was unblemished and had nothing to fix, no dents or even minor scratches.

Ugh. You had to go bring that up That experiment lasted part of a weekend and proved that in addition to looking odd, they were unstable -- those mirrors flapped around at speed fairly extensively. They were removed after 2 rides because they never really met their intended purpose -- of actually providing better rear-ward visibility.

I suppose if I stuck three or four bars on each side of the rack with about 8 or 10 mirrors on each on I could compete in the mod excess flash scooter category, but that isn't my aim.

I do find the rear cowl bars both attractive and practical; they have proven to be effective protection for the paint on a few occasions.

Cheers

Portofino GTVs are lovely. Glad you got rid of the mirrors. I really like the crashbars on the V series scooters. They suit them really well.
