Is there a way to set a login preference that can automatically sort all the posts I look at by "Newest First"? I realize I could change it at the bottom of each thread, but it's a hassle to do each time. This is especially annoying on things like spotter threads. I don't want to have to open the thread, click on page 17, then scroll all the way down just to see a new reply. It would be nice if the threads did this automatically, by a pref I set in my profile.

If you click the coloured arrow to the left of the thread title it takes you straight to the new content - is that what you're trying to do?

not exactly... the arrow only works on a per-page basis. Not much use on a thread that spans multiple pages... plus the fact that I'd still have to click the arrow on each thread anyways, kindof defeating the purpose.

I think the answer is no ... at least not that I have found as yet! However, if you set your preferences to receive email notification of new posts in threads in which you have taken part, it takes you to the new content.

Click the small page next to the name of the last poster and that will take you to the end of the thread.

I can't take credit for that -- it's a standard feature on all phpBB installations.

on other forums i'm part of, there is a thread display mode in the user's settings where you could specify newest first, but i can't find it here. i agree with kriskeyman that doing it for each thread get tiring. plus the setting wont stick when you jump from thread to thread.

Why would you read a conversation in reverse? Or at least, why would you make a consistent habit of it? The forum has the facility to take you to the first unread post in a thread, why not use it?

Same reason I go to Twitter and see newest posts first, or email clients that offer to show the most recent messages at the top. I don't see it as reading a conversation in reverse because I don't think forum threads should read like books. I prefer looking at the latest post and working my way 'back'. Nothing against the 'not-so-modern' way of doing things, just my 2¢.

Threads in forums are conversations. You can choose not to believe it, but that doesn't mean they're not conversations.

Oh look! We're having a conversation right now!

(Which is to say that I'm not likely to add this feature, for approximately the same reason that you will never, ever see nested threads here).

I believe you misread. I did not say forum threads are not conversations.

No worries, this missing feature isn't going to turn me away. I can handle a few extra clicks and some scrolling... but I do wonder how my browsing habits would change on MV if this feature were implemented. I do think I would find myself viewing more multi-page threads.

Or you can just click on the arrow at the left of the Subject line and it takes you right to the latest new post you haven't read in a thread.

This is a red herring. There's no reason to scroll. If you hit the colored triangle on the left side of a thread, you will be taken directly to the first unread post in the thread, no matter how deep it is or how many pages are in the thread. Multi-page is irrelevant.

Of course, if you're not logged in, you don't get this feature because the forum doesn't have any way to remember where you last left off in a given thread. But then, if you're not logged in, you also can't see which threads have unread posts in them.

How do I get this to work across multiple devices? I stay logged in to MV on my iPhone, iPad, desktop & portable - but this never seems to work when I move from one device to another.

A long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away) this was kind of broken, because the forum stored the thread status of every thread in a browser cookie, which was per-device. Nowadays, the forum keeps track of it at the server, so it works seamlessly across any device. I regularly move between multiple devices and computers, and the forum always always always knows where I left off in each thread.

Hmm, what am I doing wrong then? On my portable I just tapped the arrow to take me to the first unread post in a thread. I then scrolled down and stopped at a post dated April 6, 2012. On my iOS device I then tapped the arrow to take me to the last unread post in the same thread. It took me to a post dated April 8, 2012. I missed 34 posts in between, and this is a thread I haven't viewed since March.

The forum can't tell where you scroll within a page -- only that you've seen a given page, and specifically the last post on that page.

Once you've been shown a page, the forum updates the database with the last post on that page. If another post appears later (or if there are more pages after the one you've just seen) then doing the same thing on a different device (or the same device, doesn't matter) will take you to that next post (or next page).

Basically, the forum records the last post that it has delivered to your browser for every thread. If you don't actually read down to the bottom of the thread that's been delivered, the forum will never know.

There is additionally a 30-day expiration for the thread/post data. If you haven't visited a page in over 30 days, the information about where you left off is purged. Thus, when asked to show the most recent post in a thread where no information about where you left off is available, the forum will choose a post that is not more than 30 days old.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that Jess. It makes sense, but I also think it's one of the reasons why I avoid using the feature. When I do use it, I often have to search surrounding posts to see where I left off.

Look for the crimson rectangle in the heading of each post. If it's white, you've been shown that post before. If it's crimson, you haven't.
