I just bought a used 2005 BV200. I did not know about the red key and card at the time. The seller who also bought the scooter used did not know about the key either or pretended not to know... Am I screwed or is there a way to get a new key and card?
I don't think you can get another red key for your scooter without getting a new CDI unit and new keyset. That really sucks. I believe a new CDI is around $300.
Whoah! The OP is only screwed if the CDI gives up the ghost or he loses the (presumably one and only) key he has, or the lock is interfered with beyond repair by a thief. The CDIs are generally very reliable - one in 10,000 failures at a (huge) guess? If that?
The biggest dilemma is what to do if the one key gets lost or stolen. But how often does your house-key get lost or stolen? I can't say I've ever lost one, and I'm not the most careful of folk.
I suggest the OP puts this down to a good lesson learned - never buy a Piaggio immobilised bike without the red (brown) key again, and in the meantime just take great care of the key he has. And if/when the bike gets sold on, make sure by then you've had a second key made up by jimh, so the loss factor is eliminated. The CDI failure issue (rare!) won't be of course. And if the locks are interfered with, insurance should pay for that.
