This morning, I noticed the plastic coating on my GTS 250 Super's passenger pegs started coming off in one small spot. I also noticed that the metal underneath was nice and shiny. At the risk of having to buy a new peg, and with the help of some acetone and q-tips, I proceeded to take the rest of the plastic coating off. 1.5 hours and one acetone-induced headache later, I have a nice, shiny, chrome-like foot peg on the left side of the scooter. Before I do the same to the right side, I was just wondering if anyone knows if the plastic coating serves a purpose? Is the foot peg exceptionally prone to rust without it? Or is it just there to dull the look of my scooter? lol.

It's definitely a protectant. ET brake levers have it as well.

Yeah, took me a minute to register there but I now realise what Drew means, and consequently what you're referring to. Half of it cracked off the levers on mine and they got a right ugly (and quite patchy) coating of what appears to be Aluminium Oxide.

If Piaggio have any brains, they gave the Super the same pegs that the 250 had--just covered it black to make it look more contemporary. If I am right, then you have nothing to worry about your uncoated pegs. They are a stainless alloy. I drilled holes into mine, and no rust there either.

Thanks guys. I think I decided to strip the plastic off the other one.
It'll probably be fine.
Worst case scenario, I buy 2 chrome pegs, right?
