Modern Vespa

I am trying to fit my FF helmet into my trunk, but it doesn't fit because there is this contraption in my trunk with a cover on it. I have a few questions. Help!

1) Does anyone know what the contraption is under the cover?
2) Will there be any issues with me removing the cover and storing my helmet in there? I am just going to remove the cover, not the contraption. But does the contraption get hot? My helmet only fits if I remove this cover (and then only barely)
3) Why does it seem that this contraption is not in the trunk of every MP3? I have looked at photos of other MP3 trunks, and it doesn't look like it is in some trunks. Maybe it is only in the 250, but not the 400...

I don't have a 250, but in the 'trunk' of my 500 there's a 'contraption' that is the evaporative cannister. Search for that phrase here and learn plenty...

It is the evaporater canister for the fuel system. Requirnment in the US, but not elsewere. It is commonly pointed to as a cause for your scooter to stall and if removed will free up space in your trunk. You'll find lots of other threads regarding stalling or evaporater canister if you search.

The 400 and 500 in the U.S. come with the canister under the seat. My 400 used to have one there too.

I have 250 and don't have THAT....

My 250 dosen't have that " contraption" in the trunk either.

Hmmm...I don't remember seeing that cover either Must pop-zee trunk and C what's what. Only cover I recall is the battery cover under the seat.

It's no doubt the charcoal canister in the evap system which is installed in all USA bikes (250 cc and over I think). Looks identical to my BV500 and my wife's BV250 - both of which were removed or disconnected.
