What a concept, They could do that here too, That'd be great,
Having pictures of a bicycle every two feet is a nice reminder that the path is for bicycles. Dave |

I am sure Donald Norman would have a thing or two to say about usability and cognitive ergonomics in this instance.
Am I the only one who finds the little blue signposts contradictory to the painted pathway marking? ![]() ![]() |

I'd get a headache if I rode on that bike path. It does seem like a lot of overkill and, as you can see, still doesn't completely solve the problem.
Stupid people do stupid things. When I was last riding the boardwalk at Virginia Beach, there would always be the clueless walking along the clearly marked bicycle paths or cyclists riding on the wrong side. I used to ride the Montour trail weekly. There are signs stating the rules of the trail, including right of way, how to signal intentions to pass (the trail is for bikes and foot traffic), etc., and these are placed only at the entrance and exit points. There are small mile-markers, too. It's a beautiful country ride. With the occasional stupid person as always. The vast majority "get it." But I wouldn't want to see either place cluttered up with signage like that. |

Yea; why do the little blue signs show pedestrians on the left, and bikes on the right? And the writing on the roadway implying the opposite - I would just ride in the middle because all the signs are confusing and contradictory.

Story is from England so bike shoud be in the left of the two bike lanes as per the markings on the pavement. Click the link and you can read the article in a British paper. |

Unfortunately, the rental bikes there didn't have them. The last time I visited, I decided to bring my own bike. It has a bell. And some people were still stupid. |

Will also take same horn with me on my walks...it's dangerous out there! Between dodging autos when crossing in a "marked" cross walk or driveways and the bicyclists coming up from behind (while on sidewalk) with no "ding ding" warning (get it???)...it's darn dangerous! Hmmm...maybe I should take the air horn and wear my helmet and armor... |

Sign Sign everywhere a sign
Blocking out the scenery breaking my mind Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign Hey. Per the picture. The cyclist is alone and can ride anywhere. It is only if someone else shows up that the side of the path ridden on matters. So all you long haired freaky people just calm down and be glad that: A) there is a bike path, and B) riders use it. Reminds me: I went back to England recently (heck, that was January, where did the time go? Must be getting old. Getting? I AM old) where was I? Oh yes. I had no trouble driving the rental car on whatever side of the road was appropriate. The problem came walking through a busy pedestrian area. In the US we folks drive on the right and hence tend to walk on the right, especially in an oncoming passing situation. In the UK it is the left. So I would meet someone face to face and step left. He would step right. I'd step right. He'd go left. We'd do the hokey pokey and eventually manage to go by one another. |

i liked this reply on the site the ic was posted:-
"It is possible the bicyclist may be American. In the USA we must all obey the rule that says we must travel on the right, whether in a car, on a bicycle, or on foot. If we stray to the left then we run the risk of running into oncoming traffic. Even in grocery stores, where there might be a kiosk set up in the center aisle, although this rule is actually unwritten, people strive to follow this rule. If he isn't American, then I would agree with those who say he is irresponsible, stubborn or just stupid." if the writer of this reply was to visit England would they expect to travel on the right?? "all Americans must drive / ride on the right because it's what they do at home....... killed in minutes......... reminded me of a joke i heard where Ireland was going to change from driving on the left to driving on the right, they were going to change over in stages, lorries and buses this week, cars and vans next week |
