You had better read this article. Buying a scooter without any keys is going to be expensive.

This post will also be good read: FAQ: Do I Need The Red Key?
Send a PM to Jimh. Jim is a professional locksmith, and a straight-up, eager and able-to-help guy. His website is http://www.allmotorcyclekeys.com/ But yes, it sounds like you will need a new ECU (which means a new throttle body), key switch, and keys; which will not be cheap. |

An ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and a Throttle Body (the housing the injector mounts to) have no relation except the ECU tells the injector when to inject the fuel. Wayne B

The ECU and throttle body are integrated into the same housing. Part number 843017. Parts manual page 46: GTS250 Parts Manual.
Slam not appreciated.

+1 on what John said. The ECU and throttle body are an integrated unit. Same same.

To the OP: Buying a modern Vespa without keys is possibly the worst mistake imaginable. The immobilizer is very effective, and as others have stated on this thread, a number of expensive pieces will have to be replaced in order to get it functioning. If it were extraordinarily cheap and you wanted a project, and had a good idea of what you were getting into, I could see it. If you're not well versed in the ignition system of modern Vespas, though, steer well clear.

Guess I have to stay on the MP3 side. Have never heard of anything like that. Why the hell do they integrate them?????
Were they trying to make it as expensive as possible if you loose your keys?? I read on here a LOT and have never seen a post that the ECU and Throttle body were the same thing so EXCUUUUSE ME!! Been working on my motocycles for 35 years. Wayne B |

A lot of sensors in that housing: throttle position, air temp, pressure, mass flow, humidity too IIRC. It's a busy box. Not sure about the rationale, but I suppose they do it to minimize external harnessing and connectors.

To the OP, if I understand it correctly, loosing your keys (or buying a scoot without keys) has about a $2,000 price tag in getting all the needed items replaced.
Is this a good estimate SDG or John? |

That sounds about right, including labor. I've never priced the parts, but I wouldn't be surprised at something like $800, just for the ECU/throttle body.
