I somehow missed the entire run of Seinfeld while I was off doing other things so had no awareness of Festivus until this year. I was pretty curious and love the idea of a secular winter holiday. The more I heard about it from friends and researched it online, the more I realized that it's anything but secular. It's the holiday of some strange cult I can't belong to because I missed the entire run of Seinfeld.

So I'm working on starting my own holiday. Working titles include Winterpalooza, Decemberus, Oneforus, and Hooch. I'm hoping the holiday will encourage people to embrace the tackiness, crass commercialism and consumer madness of the holiday season. Traditions will include viewing holiday lights displays, going to crowded shopping areas to people watch, and overeating. It may also include at least one December viewing of "Scrooged" and watching at least 4 (not necessarily contiguous) hours of TBS' 24 hours of "A Christmas Story." On Dec. 25th you open your home to Jews and members of other faiths including Christians who have nowhere else to go. Or you gather everyone for an orphans scooter ride like the one the SD Scooter Squadron is doing. Brilliant!

Obviously still a work in progress. Should have it all worked out by October 2010.

In the meantime, enjoy whatever it is you do.
