Hello,

I'm new to this forum, so "Hello everyone".
I'm a Vespa and Lambretta enthusiast, I have many of them, and used them daily in the City of Lights, in France.

So my questions / thoughts :
I have looked at the different options available, and searched this forum.

I'd like to put bar ends mirror on a GTS.

First idea was to look at traditional one like these usually seen on vespa and lambretta :

-Mirror handlebar ends STADIUM
http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/61383000/Mirror+handlebar+ends+STADIUM.aspx

or cheaper alternative
-Mirror, adjustable, kidney
http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/61082000/Mirror+adjustable+kidney.aspx
http://www.sip-scootershop.com/EN/Products/61081000/Mirror+adjustable+kidney.aspx

but will it be possible to mount them with end weight of a GTS using a longer bolt ?

I also found these one :

are they a good alternative to the more expensive CRG ?

I really like this example

but can't find any info one them. Anyone know ?

Thanks for your help.

The GTS has threaded inserts in the bars on each side (I think they're welded in there). You can't use the CRG or others because of this with the factory setup. There is a company in the USA called Jettin: http://www.jettin.com/ProductBarEnds.htm

You could drill out the threaded inserts but then you would lose your bar ends and some people have had wobbles with the front end without them or without a heavier bar end.

You will see different bar ends on the Jettin link. The heaviest ones ($36 U.S.) are chromed and they work well. All of the others are much lighter than the 15 ounce models. All of them have a slot for tying down the scooter for transport. You can also use this slot to mount CRG or other mirrors that will fit a 7/8" handlebar. I have the Jettin bar ends on all of my scooters and I used to have a set of CRG mirrors mounted on one of them but the mirrors (their largest model) were still too small for me. I just couldn't see the traffic behind and to the side of me nearly as well as I could with the factory supplied mirrors.

Thanks for your reply.

I like the Oberon, but you loose bar ends which is a problem on GTS.

The Motrax seems a good value compared to CRG, and no need to go for Jettin bar ends.

I had another idea, making a slot in the bar ends and use this

Not sure there is enough alloy to remove on the bar ends to go 22mm.

No one knows where the mirrors come from on the German white GTS ?

They look like they could be Rizoma mirrors. Not sure but Google up Rizoma and look at their bar-end mirrors.

I believe the Vespa handle bar is 22mm in diameter. You'd either have to cut the bar ends or see if a longer bolt will let them mount farther out.

I got these rizomas from pj's parts. They required new bar ends since the stock ones are conical. They were pricey, but I have been very happy with them.

I got Oberons for my motorcycle, and I have to say, I can't recommend them. They are even smaller than the CRGs and the glass is flat vs. convex, which means your field of view rearward is tiny - there's no way you can really see who's around you, just who's directly behind.

The CRGs are great mirrors (IMO) and are best for situational awareness. Because they are convex, they are less good at letting you see whether it is a big black Benz behind you or a Crown Vic. This can be important.

On the plus side, you can buy replacement parts for tipover damage.

Also, if you live in CA, get the lanesplitter model, which lets you fold up the mirrors to get between those two SUVs. It's also a good feature if you're parked on the sidewalk and you don't want pedestrians bumping into or messing with your mirrors.

I don't have any issues with the Rizomas. In fact, I feel like my field of vision is improved over stock.

The mirrors on the white Vespa:
External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

... were made by the owner. I asked him about them and he mentioned that he had turned them on a metal lathe from blocks of aluminum.

They are gorgeous! Too bad they are one offs. i suggested he could make some money selling them.

What size is the screew, and what did you use for the old mirror plug?

That's my GT with the stripes and Motrax mirrors. I used the dealer-installed chrome weights and used a longer stainless version of the bar-end weight mounting bolts - $0.70 at a local fastener shop. The mirrors are pinched between the weights and the handlebars.

Also, I originally wanted to go with the plastic plug in the brake reservoir covers. Ended up buying an extra set of GTS covers, filling, glassing and painting them to match.

Yes, the glass is convex. They have a good field of vision, but are smaller - 3 inches versus 5 on the stock mirrors.

Very cool. I just ordered jettin bar ends. I am sick of the factory mirrors.

I got the Jettin bar ends with the tie down notchand the CRG Lane Splitter mirrors. I am not sorry at all. Top quality and what I was after. Sometimes dropping the $ is worth it, just my 2 cents.

But from what I can see here you guys did a great job working around the cost so kudos to you!
