I did a search first, but found nothing on this.

The turn signals on the 500 are on little arms or stalks that are somewhat flexible.. I came out this morning and found that my cover was tight (due to rain) and the left front one had popped out of it's mounting. I looks like a little ridge to get it back in, but try as I might, it won't pop back in. I finally found some black electical tape here at work and taped it in place. I will ask the dealer to fix it, I suppose, but awfully fragile. anyone else have this sort of Problem? Whats the secret to getting it to pop back into th emounting? I pushed fairly hard, but really don't want to break it.. It still works, and with the tape, you can hardly even tell there is a problem..

Live & learn.. Nerd emoticon

Thanks..

The secret is a screw driver...

I've had these pop off, as they are designed to do instead of breaking. you unscrew it, slide it into the slots and then screw it back in. Takes 2 minutes tops when you have the screw driver ready.

Yup - meant to pop off - actually a darned nice system.
Unscrew the screw holding teh clear part on. You'll notice there's a sort of slide that slips over teh stem. Slip it back on - reattach lens and you're ready to rock.

Shifty & Bubba..

Thanks very much.. I fixed the left front turn signal on my 500 when I got home tonight from work.. I had my doubts, but gave it a try and then figured it out when I took the light apart and saw the fork shape on the end of the reflector.. The only problem I had was getting the screw in as I wasn't sure about the direction and the screwdriver that came with the tool kit was not the best fir for the Phillips head.. I had a better one in my tool kit in the house and then it was easy !! Clap emoticon

In the course of the past two days, I "broke" both front turn signals while maneuvering in tight spaces. Those things sure stick out. Was all ready to purchase some new ones, but will print out this thread and take a closer look tonight with a screwdriver.

Don't be fooled - you *can* break them. I had one of mine pop out the embedded nut. Not a chance in hell of getting it back in normally. I had to slit the plastic, weasel the nut back in and the epoxy it. It's held but now that I know you can break them I'm extra careful.

I managed to do the same thing, but got the nut back in place after standing the rubber in a cup of hot water for a few minutes.

Bumped mine off twice pulling up to the same gas pump as my hubby. We'll be too close and when his bike leans over on the kickstand his Bandit's new luggage is just the right height to pop my blinker off. Pops right back on. Don't remember how we did it, but it must not have been hard because I did it while he was paying for the gas. They are easy to knock off, my MP3 didn't even jiggle and the blinker popped off clean

if the topend pops off simply unscrew the lens and you see the reflector (silver part is loose) form the holder you can slide it back on it

When it's off the Nut use washing up liquid or soap or tyregrease and it pops back on again

or you can orde these they are 1.5" or 2" long and the light is brighter then the orginial ones

I managed to do the same thing, but got the nut back in place after standing the rubber in a cup of hot water for a few minutes.
Left side was as described. Removed lens and just slid the chromed reflector "U" tab back onto the black housing. Re-attach lens and all set. Right side had the hollow bolt pop out of the housing. After dis-assembly, ran under hot water for about 20 seconds, but still hard as a rock. Will try again letting it sit in hot, hot water and use some liquid dish washing soap to try to make slippery enough to slip back in. (How'd they get those things in there in the first place?)

Thanks for the advice and relating experiences. Saved me a bunch of cash ... (I hope, do be determined if I can pop the bolt back in on the right side).

This was actually a factor in my deciding on the 400.

I was examining both at the dealer, side by side. Was thinking about the 500: bigger engine, lots of luggage attachment points, etc, when I noticed that the 500 had one of its front turn indicators loosly dangling, hanging down by the wire. Looking at it, I wondered if it would just pop back in - tried the fit - couldn't determine whether if would pop in or not... Then I wondered what the dealer would think if I was there leaning over the bike on the showroom floor trying to pop the ferschluginer turn signal back in! Wha? emoticon

Took another look at the 400. Faired-in turn signals. Hmmm. Lots of enclosed luggage space. Hmmm. A little less expensive. Hmmm.

So I took the easy way out. Not a slam on the 500 - far from it - but the turn signal was a little something that made my decision easier that day...

Best wishes to all --
Michael

But who carries these in the states? The TNT web site is worthless. After what seems like "hours" and several tries ... I can't find those signals, what the model number is, who makes them, etc. Do you have a link you can post?

Yes, I saw your location in your first post about he lights. I was just hoping that you could supply a manufacture or part number and if you knew an importer. Your link helps. THank you. Alas, they do not ship to the states. Looks like this is the model:

Knipperlichtset Arrold Homol TNT (in black)

OAD, I was looking at those this afternoon. Maybe a second choice (if I can't fix the OEM one I have). The Knipperlichtset is a lot more attractive to me than the DMP lights. Then again, difficult to really see if one cannot hold them.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, and I realize that the chances of getting caught are slim to nil, but: OAD the signals you linked to are for dirt bikes (the link even says so), for on-road motorcycles capable of greater than 30mph, NHTSA requires turns signals to meet SAE 588 and FMVSS 108, which in turn require turn signals to have an area of at least 12.5 square centimeters. Those tiny signals Maksor posted, while perhaps brighter and logically safer, don't meet the federal requirement, and I would be skeptical of any U.S. signal that is labeled as for off-road vehicles or doesn't say meets DOT or NHTSA requirements.

think about this for a sec.

Dirt bike signals for what turning at the next tree?

turn signals are made for street use. Application what ever you want to install them on. They bikes don't know any different. If they are brighter than stock "DOT" approved signals who's going to tell you you can't use them. There ain't a cop who will check the stampings on them. they just want you to have them and in working order. bet they can't even state the distance requirement for visability if you were to ask them face to face.

Safety inspection station won't catch them unless they are really anal.

And most dirt bike lights are just more flexible and do meet DOT Reg.

That's the trick. "Boiled" it for just a minute or two ... fished out with a "L" shaped screwdriver ... shook most of the water off ... and popped the bolt right in. Very easy as the rubber was just pliable enough. Thanks for the tip. Both turn signals are back on and working fine now.

Still like those lights Maksor showed. Too bad we can't get them here.
