I have a previously owned LX50 and I think it's haunted...

I brought it into the local shop for the "spring tune" and was told it was all set. It was running well for about 3 weeks.

The first weird thing is that it completly died as I was coasting into a left turn. Had to walk it home, and after fiddling around for a while, got it going again.

Then, I was trailing gas as I rode. I replaced the cracked fuel line from the pitcock to the carb. It then ran fine for a few rides.

Now, it only starts half the time. Sometimes it will start fine, others it sounds like it's going, but won't turn over. The battery is OK, the evap hose is disconnected.

Any suggestions?? It seems to NOT work right when I need it to!

I want to figure out DIY-style...because I'm not even sure I can get it to the shop again.

Thanks!!

Yup. That's a haunted scoot all right. Call a priest. Unless it's still under warranty. (I'm surprised there isn't a wiki on how to exorcise your Vespa...) Razz emoticon

+1 it sounds like it really is haunted and you may very well be doomed as well.

I just went outside to try it...and, it started.

This is just hours after no starting -- and me not doing anything in between.

Maybe it only works at night?

A scooter that only works at night? Definitely haunted.

How old's the scoot?

If its not starting by not even responding to the push start then its probably not the carb. It cant hurt to do a carb cleaning though as long as you know how to tune a carb.

Make sure all your connections are good, spark plug wire and such. Also you can check the connections behind the horncast.

Does the kick start start it, cause then it could be a carb issue.

If nothing else, you should let the Discovery Channel know. You might end up with your own T.V. show--"The Real Haunted Vespas of Cook County" or "The Haunted Vespa Hunters"--you know, something like that. I'd watch.

When you press the start button does it always start to turn or not? I had a problem when you press the button nothing happens. It was due to a loose ground wire.

push start? like a run and bump? Can't do that on an LX50. when i used to work for Vespa, one problem the 50cc's had constantly was the carbs would bog down until they were daily riders.

When you changed your petrol pipe did you use exactly the same length.?
If not you could be getting air locks/bubbles in the pipe.

I've done the carb cleaning...and had the shop do it for the "spring tune" not too long ago, so I can't imagine that's the issue.

I don't have the crank for a kick start, so I can't use that troubleshoot.

I do have some damage (previous owner) to the front panel where there is some daylight between the panel and the inner workings back in there. Mabe that stuff gets wet in the frequent Chicago rain and needs to dry out? But some of the times it won't start it's super hot out -- so should be dry.

The length of fule hose is about the same -- maybe not exact, but only off by a few millimeters.

Good suggestions, though. I appreciate the feedback! I'll look into a few suggestions as we go. Unfortunately didn't get the ride this weekend busy with work

When you find an exorcism that works, let me know! I've tried several and
none have worked.

My ET is back from a complete cleaning and adjustment from the "dealer" and it won't start usually either. Some times does, usually does not. And the PROMISED me it worked every time for them.....
