My wife's Audi's headlights had gotten so yellow and crazed, we were worried about getting a ticket. As a risk-free experiment (since they were toast anyway) I bought a restoration kit made by 3M. It included 3 different grits of abrasive, a buffing pad and compound, all of which fit on a normal hand held electric drill. The results were amazing. The headlights look brand new.

If you have a scratched windscreen or helmet visor, this $16 kit is worth a try. I wouldn't hesitate to try it.

My brother just did some headlights with a Meguires kit. I was amazed at the results.

Does anyone know if this kit would work on the tail lights of my 1996 Porsche 911 - they are not faded but a couple of areas have dulled like they have been polished with a cutting compound (I had my engine lid resprayed last year).

Replacement rear light clusters are about $300 each here in AU, and I would need to do BOTH and possibly the red centre reflector as well so they all matched, (this would be over $1000) so the option of polishing the taillight would be a good one.

Thanks in advance ...

Can you post a pic of your tail lights? If the problem is on the surface of the plastic, It will probably work. I was really amazed.

Yes, you need to mask off any bits that you don't want sanded. I used 2 layers of blue 3M tape all around the lenses before I started.

I will take a pic when I get back home, I am at our beach house for this long weekend but will be back tomorrow. What is the name of the 3M product? I will see if I can get it here in Oz.

It was just called a "Headlight restoration kit." You need to have a drill motor, as the abrasive pads are made to fit in a drill. I also used blue masking tape made by 3M, which is not included in the kit, to protect the painted areas around the lenses.

I have the kit and a scratched tall windscreen I hope to try it on before the winter.

Only thing preventing me from doing so is that the instructions specify a 1200 - 1600 rpm drill, which my cheap Ryobi can't hack. 1600 rpm will require a corded drill or an 18V+ cordless.

That's exactly what I used. I did use a corded drill. I didn't know how long the process would take, and didn't want to screw around with dead batteries.

here are two pics, you can more easily notice the slight hazing between the RH indicator and the centre lens. Its only slight in these pics, but the hazing looks more obvious in sunlight. Looks like the 3M product will be well worth a try![/img]

msap, that is exactly the kind of crazing that prompted my getting the kit and giving it a go. Mine was much worse, however. You may not need to use the coarsest of grits in the kit, and I'm confident you will be pleased with the results.
