It is curious, though--at least here in the U.S.--that the more "macho" a guy is (or wants to appear), the more he seems to rely on engines and motorized things. My brother is one of those types. He rides a massive Harley, drives an enormous truck, he also owns a couple of ATVs, a snowmobile, and a huge power boat. And he ridicules me because I prefer to ride my bicycle to work, I kayak, I cross-country ski, and I backpack in the Sierras and Rockies. In the overall sum of things, who's really the more "macho"?

Brothers...aren't they something else? Sounds similar but luckily I have an older brother...who's a decent, level headed guy. Oh he's got his "Man Toys"...he has a couple of Harleys (Road King a Sportster), Kawasaki Ninja, BMW sportbike (suppose to be something of a niche bike), Vespas (GT200, LX150, ET4 and his ET2 "beater bike"). The ET2 is his favorite. He's also got the big Ford truck (uses it to haul stuff) but also has Mini-Coopers.

Most important has never made fun of me on my GT200 or my wife's Honda Metro (which I ride on occasion).

He love's to just scoot around and gets a kick out of all the "attention" he get's by the looks he gets from all the Harley and crotch rocket riders...just laughs about it and doesn't mind at all...I guess it's his personna of really being at ease with the confidence with himself...doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. He's not one to get hung up on this "macho" stuff although he's an accomplished surfer, windsurfer and one heck of a "wrencher". He's leaving today to pick up his Harley in Denver for a three week ride / adventure to Canada.

Sorry got off track...but I'm glad to have him as a brother and to him a "Happy Father's Day!

sorry, i try very hard to avoid getting opinionated, but this sort of excess just makes my piss boil you only live once indeed.
A person could argue that it's similar to the excess of flying to Greece to ride around on scooters that use up scarce resources, and pollute the island? On the one trip, your portion of the flight it took to get there released 1,426 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere, where it (supposedly) is worse than if it had been released closer to the earth's surface. Not only that, but you did the same the year before! Nobody needs that kind of excess.

Once you start down the path of deciding someone elses pursuits are not in the interest of the common good, it won't be long before you find yourself in the same situation. In fact, there are already those in the UN who advocate forcing reduced air travel by charging huge tariffs on developed countries, with the express purpose of making air travel all but out of reach to the ordinary citizen.

I'm playing devil's advocate here....my point is that some excesses are "excusable" while others are commonly and popurlarly accepted targets. If we advocate forcing people to comply with our point of view, it won't be long until we are being forced ourselves to comply with someone elses.

i doubt i'm the only person on this forum who takes the occasional flight out of the country. i don't claim to be 100% carbon neutral, and i don't recall asking anyone to comply with my point of view... but i also don't believe your comparison is a valid one: two flights to Greece in two years vs. driving a ridiculously oversized vehicle every day without a damned good reason? please.

it's interesting you should say this ... it's exactly what i feel when i hear people complaining about 'political correctness' attempting to dictate what they can drive, and when they can drive it. i fully expect that within my lifetime, i will be forced to comply with someone else's rules regarding my personal automobile use (if i ever own one), and i expect those regulations will be handed down by governments, out of necessity - certainly not because of the wishes of some nebulous group of the 'politically correct'.

Of course you are not the only one taking flights from time to time, and the truck owner (whoever he or she is) is not the only person driving a big truck. The fact that other people do it doesn't make either right or wrong, correct?

I don't have a problem with you flying wherever you want, I was just using it as an example, but it looks as though it hit a sore spot.

This thread is on the precipice of becoming political, so I'll politely move on.

Try living a week in the middle of a strip mine, no water, no showers, no electricity. I prefer going to bed every night clean and not with coal dust all over me and we don't have 60 degree temps are night in the summer so AC is nice so I can get some sleep.

And like Len said, it takes a lot less co2 emissions to get me the 150 miles I drive to go ATVing for a week than flying to Greece, so who is being more excessive here Laughing emoticon Laughing emoticon

And that is the different mind set between UK/Europe and the US, I think there would be a Govt take over if they tried giving us gas vouchers here.

Like I said you don't get it, people can drive 100 miles round trip just to get to work, there are no frickin trans or buses to get from West Virginia to Washington DC, thousands of people make that trip everyday.
I am very lucky, I have a 3 mile commute, but before that I was driving all day as a field engineer, putting 50,000 to 75,000 miles a year on my vehicles.

I did some research, I was off in my estimates, the UK is 94251 sq mikes, while Va. is 39594 sq miles, so about half the size of the UK, but that is one state. Lets see about a big state now, like Texas is 268601 sq miles, so you can get 2.8 UK's in side Texas. Get the idea, we are big.
If you want to get into this further, will have to go off forum because that would invoice political opinions. i.e.: socialist ideas like gas vouchers.

oh, i get it all right ... i was born in Canada and grew up in the middle of nowhere. i agree that you absolutely need a car in that kind of environment - but you'll never convince me that - unless you have to transport heavy equipment/livestock/other large items on a regular basis - you really need a truck with a 6L engine...

and two trips to greece?? oh come on. there's no way that is a valid basis for comparison Razz emoticon even by an exceptionally conservative estimate (i.e. 15,000 miles a year, none of it in the city), that F650 is producing at least four times the amount of CO2 per year under normal use, not to mention that it's a diesel engine, which means that it burns dirtier.

and finally, for what it's worth - until i moved to england (where camping consists of sitting around in a tent in a farmer's field 2km from the motorway, with no campfires allowed and 200 other total strangers in close proximity ) i went camping every year, summer and winter... often no tapwater, usually no showers (unless we were doing 'deluxe' camping) never any electricity ... and certainly no AC! isn't that what camping is supposed to be about? doing without all that stuff??

I wasn't debating the truck issue, people aren't going to be commuting in that.
I was debating the gas vouchers, we won't put up with that. If I want to go and can afford it, it's not up to the govt to tell me how much gas I can buy.

I don't go camping, I go ATVing and that involves a Travel Trailer that has AC and showers after a day of this
http://motoaus.com/images/stories/atv/paul-worth.jpg

I roughed it when I was young, I need a bed and AC/Heat depending on the time of year.
Hell it's been in the 90 every day here for the past two week with lows in the high 70's, to hot for me to be sleeping with no AC

That did sell a lot of big SUV's. The revision was done in 2003 when these vehicles were around. This is what happens when Congress does not think a bill through, as usual
I like to call them congressional screw up's as apposed lope holes.
Why is someone reading the law and finding a way they meet the requirements a loop hole I always thought the law maker should be the one ridiculed for creating a badly written bill, as apposed to ridiculing the good accountant for finding the screw up and using it because they meet the requirements Nerd emoticon Nerd emoticon Laughing emoticon

I won't put up with it either.

For the record, I have a great love of nature and outdoors and for some reason (probably genetic because I don't recall making a decision at some point) always tended to travel light in my personal life.

I wish others would be more careful about waste too, but I do not believe it is my place nor my right to legislate their behavior, to force them by law, to act in certain ways or limit their freedom merely because it would be more acceptable to me.

None of this changes the fact that my job and home are not very close and I don't want someone else to decide how much gas I get to buy designated by a disinterested third party. I'm a big boy now and I can do that all by myself.

As the world's resources continue to dwindle, the decision will be out of everyone's control.... and much sooner than you think.

That makes me laugh!!

I once met up with a guy dressed from head to toe in Harley gear and leathers. Came to a bar that I had been invited to by some folks I met during my trip from TX to CA. I nicely and casually asked him about his bike, since he was obviously a walking advertisement for HD. He proceded to brag to everyone within earshot about his 4-year-old special edition something or other Harley. It sounded like a very nice bike. He'd paid something like $40k for it altogether. His mistake was mentioning that it had less than a whopping 200 miles on it, because he trucked it to all the rallies so it wouldn't get messed up. And no, it was not because he didn't have time to actually ride it.

The people who'd invited me to the bar proceded to tell him about the current trip I was on, on my kitted 50, and how I'd ridden the entire way. I actually had no part in the conversation at that point. He was laughed out of the bar. Definately what you call a "Diaper Harley."

Well, that's how society works. You give away freedoms that conflict with the values of the group. So until we reach your lawless utopia, we're going to need to prioritize certain values that will conflict with certain freedoms. Personally, I don't think it's unreasonable to value the ecological stability of the planet over some nerd's freedom to swan around town in a ridiculous monster truck. Not the majority position at the moment but it's getting there.
