I envy you guys, I spent 8 months in the Tuscan sun,
My last year of Art college off campus in Pietra Santa We were lucky to get one day of sun a week while living there, Yes, It rains buckets for 8 months, Consider yourselves lucky you only had one week. Still, It is beautiful there, I miss our old villa in the foothills of the mountains. (That we only paid a $100. month for in the winter amongst the 7 of us) But the reason our rent was so cheap was because we were helping the owners renovate the house, Which was a derilect house that was bombed out from ww2. We were putting in a septic system for them, But were later ordered by the town council to stop, Turns out that the town didn't have a sewage system and our making a septic system would set a precedent and they would also have to make septic tanks. So...They made us stop and then happily continued to dump their raw sewage in the river with their Roman sewage system. Also the town council got together and made sure that we didn't have to pay rent either. It was an interesting year for sure. ![]() Dave |

That work they've done to straighten up the tower in Pisa has really worked. Almost no lean to it at all now

I had lots of other friends that did, But no one wanted to see it when I wanted to see it, So I never saw it, On questioning them about it they said it was a waste of time. The city was virtually destroyed in WWII and the tower was the only thing worth seeing, Still, I would have liked to have said I climbed to the top of it. Was it open to climb? I could have gone there on my own I suppose, But most times I was more interested in going to Florence to stay with friends that had rented huge villa's. Our off campus year was split into two parts, 35 were based in Florence, They were the painters, While, 9 of us were based in Pietra Santa, We were the Sculptors. The Sculptors had more fun, (The sculptors were split into two parts as well, Marble carving and Bronze casting) We were free ranging and did whatever we wanted, I went to London England at Christmas, Ended up staying there a month and a half. I worked at Harrods Dept store while there and they were very sad when I had to leave to go back to school. They expected me to stay forever, Having a dual citizenship has it's advantages. Dave |

We were in a little town called Ruosina in 1979/80, In the foothills of the mountains,
The map below shows you the route I had to drive daily on my scooter rain or shine to Pietra Santa. Seravezza is the halfway point, Well near enough, It's pretty much straight roads to Pietra Santa from there. Lots of fun in the dark coming home, Those hair pin turns are murder. Course, Before getting the scooter I came home by bus, 500 lire (About .75ยข Canadian each way) got us home and to school in the morning, Luckily our house had a bus stop sign on it, So missing the bus in the morning was difficult.

Someone from Pisa told us that a representative of the Geeley Company, from China, said that he couldn't understand what all the fuss was over the tower leaning. He said his company could easily build towers that started to lean. Sort of an industry standard for them, or something.

I met a lovely old couple in their 70's that rode 50cc mopeds all the way from Paris,
They said they were on their way to Florence. They bought their mopeds at the airport in Paris Italy...An amazing place. |
