This is funny...

Vespa issues parking fines to 100,000 gas-guzzling motorists

"More than 100 000 unsuspecting 'offenders' received parking fines for driving difficult-to-park, gas guzzling motor vehicles, instead of styling Vespa Scooters."

Oooh! And a follow-up: Vespa SA launches arresting marketing campaign

"Employees of Vespa SA, their advertising agency Guerrilla Marketing and their distribution partners the Flyer Guys were arrested as a result of Vespa SA's new promotional campaign last week."

It's not that big a deal, but I've had ticket-like ads placed on my wipers and I found it rather irritating. The fact that the recipient is relieved to find it's not a ticket doesn't matter. It can still generate ill will toward the advertiser. I'd advise Vespa against this tactic (not that they are listening to me!).

Of course, now that their ad agency has had people arrested and a case against Vespa has been initiated, they've probably decided to try something else anyway.

To the contrary my friend. The arrests generate free media coverage for Vespa and draw only more attention to their efforts. This could likely encourage more such campaigns not fewer. Still, I'm with you on the irritation factor.

Maybe Vespa is hooking up with Arianna Huffington and going after gas guzzling SUV's. Money spent on gas supports terrorism ya know....

I think that's a lame ad campaign. Let's do a poll.

The fact that we're chatting about it makes the campaign a success by almost any measure. As for the tactic, I'm opposed.
