EDIT: As of 10/18/2010, all brackets ordered to satisfy this waiting list are sold out, and a new 2011 UFP waiting list has been started. For information on footpeg brackets, including if there are any currently in stock or links to the current waiting list if applicable, visit: http://www.modernvespa.com/forum/topic65891?start=0.
-----------------------------------------

As of 26 July 2010, all UFP brackets are sold out. Now I have to start thinking about when, and if, I will have the next batch fabricated.

Last year, it took all summer and most of the fall to sell the twenty UFP/3s I ordered. This year, it is halfway through the summer and all thirty-six UFP/LTs are already gone. This makes me think there may be merit to ordering a restock this summer...but I am not going to plunk down several thousand dollars without having a good idea of whether or not I will be able to sell them.

Both last year and this spring, I asked people to PM me if they wanted a bracket. That led to an issue which was not terribly important for the initial batch, but which does not bode well for a restock. Specifically, one person in four who said they wanted brackets never actually send payment. For the initial batch, that was okay because I knew I would just sell the brackets to somebody else; but for a restock order, that's a major problem. If I am ordering 36 brackets because I think I have 18 already sold, I have to be really sure that's true.

So, I am going to try something new. Studies in psychology and project management show that people are more likely to carry through with their commitments when those promises are visible - i.e. made in public. This is the whole basis of "12-step programs"...and since we're all addicted to our MP3s, I'm going to apply the same approach here!

If you are interested in putting footpegs on your MP3 by buying a UFP/LT bracket (described in the main thread at http://www.modernvespa.com/forum/topic65891?start=0), post a reply to this, confirming that you have read the first three posts in that thread and want to, and are able to, purchase a set. Don't send a Private Message, but post where everybody can see: I want them, I've read the thread about them, I can and will pay for them.

If I can get 18 people posting that they want brackets by the end of August, I will notify all the members to re-confirm their interest, and then to mail in their checks (or other payment, if outside the U.S.). Anyone who does not, I will publicly post that fact (the MV version of a public dunking pool). Brackets could conceivably be in members' hands by mid-September, with plenty of riding still left!

Ready...set...go!

Hi there,

I can confirm that I would like to order these brackets and have read the first three posts from the mentioned thread.

I'm based in the UK and will therefore require the overseas shipping.

If it's any help, I'm happy to 'take a punt' and pay for these up-front.

Cheers

Thanks for the offer Dr. T, but that would not be fair if the order does not go in until 2011. But that does give me confidence. One down, 17 to go...

I think you might have the beginnings of a small, home-based business. As such, there are risks involved. Just don't use your house as collateral.

After you get semi-established with the foot pegs, you can start designing a tall, adjustable windscreen for the 500. Would bet you'd sell a bunch. The secret to financial success is to find a need ... then fill it. As you have done with your foot pegs.

p.s. Haven't been able to install my pegs yet as the bike is still in the shop.

Thanks Volosong, and I hope your scoot is back on the road soon.

I have indeed designed an extremely nice windscreen for the /500 and use it every day (described elsewhere on this forum), but it is not adjustable and was a huge project. Not plug-n-play at all.

Meanwhile, another member on this forum found a very simple solution with an oddball screen made for an older bike, and invented a very clever way to mount it, which made it adjustable pretty easily in both height and rake. Problem is, the windshield is no longer sold (and maybe not the bike either, although I'm not too clear on that).

So nothing ever really came of this, but as I observed to the inventor, with just a few machined parts he could have a real commercial product there, although he'd have to talk to a plastic fabricator like Gustoffson to start making similar plastic screens. This was hands-down the best [potentiall] plug-n-play solution I've seen for the /500 - kind of crude, but only a first-try with available parts, it could IMHO be turned into a beautiful turnkey solution with just a little effort.

http://www.modernvespa.com/forum/topic53886

Another member came up with a damned clever way to mount a shield using a Honda screen's hardware, but not exactly plug-n-play http://www.modernvespa.com/forum/topic44314 and not exactly cheap. Not sure that there's actually anything marketable per se.

While we're on the subject of home-based businesses selling MP3 stuff, I also want to use this opportunity to yell at MJM50cal for not taking his brilliant windscreen-mounted front (GPS, cell phone, beer, machine gun, etc.) mounting bracket and turning that into a commercial product. How selfish of him to keep it all to himself!

If there's quite a few orders from the UK then I'd be willing to take a punt and order double that amount as 'one batch' - this should help keep shipping costs down, and there'd be a reserve supply over here for UK users. No add-ons, just re-distribute at cost, and the UK requesters could pay me back in local currency by Paypal so making it all very easy for them.

This is my order for a set of brackets. I have read the three posts in the other thread and understand the terms.
I have been on the fence about ordering a set since you first developed them, a broken knee has put me over. I think that even when completely healed the normal MP3 riding position would become painful after a few minutes. These should help, especially if I lose some range of motion in my knee.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Hi Jagony, welcome down from the fence!

One thing you should be aware of. Any vehicle with footpegs, and the MP3 mounting UFPs is no exception, is going to "dip" as you ride. For me and I am sure I speak for all UFP owners, it's not a problem and indeed is part of the fun of riding with pegs, as the pegs flex up and down it's a little like being on a horse. (Well that's probably a bit of romantic hyperbole but I like to imagine that's what it's like, anyway.) The UFP/LTs do this to a much lesser extent that the UFP/3s, but it will always be there with pegs but not present at all on a scooter's floorboards. I only mention this in case small repetitive cycles would be aggravating.

Jim, thanks for that offer, that may be a possibility. Actually I am going to go out on a limb and say there may even be the potential for a small profit on your end because the per-piece shipping costs should go down when shipped in bulk, but we'll see. But that may be the encouragement needed to get some more overseas fence-sitters to jump on. Are we talking just England, just U.K., or the E.U.?

Could easily be EU-wide, though outside UK may be slightly higher shipping cost, and there'd be a EUR-GBP conversion cost for punters. Whatever, I won't be looking to make any profit, just passing good gear on.

Let's let this thread get bumped now and again, and referred to in other forums, and I might be able to order 30 straight off in a few months time. They are worth it, and if the order numbers brings the item cost down, all the better.

So to be clear, peartree, if they are not going to be offered directly by Jimc, that would mean that you do not want a set?

Me13, you are not reading the prerequisite threads. You will not be notified via e-mail and if you are not planning on being a regular part of the Modern Vespa community, you will certainly miss out on the next batch. You need to take the time to read through and thoroughly understand the UFP threads, this offer, and our community.

Rjeffb,
I'd like to ask you, where are you at with these orders? Are you still counting them up, or did you decide not to do it because of the low number of responders? I would be interested in getting the brackets next summer, but I suppose that's too late to do you any good, right??
Brenda

edit: forget the next summer s**t!! See my post below--I want them NOW!

er, well, I want them as soon as you get enough orders...kay?

TB, thanks for the heads up. At this rate, it may not wind up being this year but I am still hopeful.

Me13, just because they are in satin does not mean they cannot be black powder-coated; it's just that the satin then does not give much benefit, hidden under the powder coating. There are at least two members who have posted pictures of the UFP/LTs in black, one of which is in the thread linked above (the regular UFP thread).

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have been lurking in the back round for awhile looking for posts and info on pegs! I would like to get on the list for these brackets .... ready and able to pay for them and have read the manditory three posts! The sooner I can get them the better.. weather in Illinios is bumpy and in a few months we will be in 6 feet of snow!

Hi I'm new to the site and have just recently purchased (Sat Aug 21st, 2010) my Mp3 400 off of E-bay, paid $5,600.00. I I have previous knee injury that causes me pain if my legs are cramped as they are while on the bike. I had a honda helix cn250 and the leg room was ample but the only complaint I have about the bike I just got is the knee issue. I saw the bracket posts and I have a have read the first three posts in that thread and want to, and are able to, purchase a set. I want a set of the foot peg brackets, I've read the thread about them, I can and will pay for them. so kindly place me on the order list before I need an Ortho visit.

Welcome to Modern Vespa, Rex!

As some may have noted, I have changed the title of the thread to "XX DAYS LEFT" to help get the message out that time is running out. Here is my current plan: I have gone ahead and requested a written quote; I already know what the price will be, but that will serve to put my fabricator on notice (to make sure he has the metal in-stock, start looking at production schedules, etc.) My intent is that if I can get - let's see, four more members, right? - in time then there will be minimum turnaround time.

At the risk of annoying people, I will also bump the thread every day until the end of the month to keep it up top.

The next step is that I will PM everyone on the list to reconfirm your commitment. Finally, I have to go to the bank to get cash (if I pay by other means, I have to have a state sales tax exemption form and that's a hassle).

Just let me know if you need the check upfront and where to send it! I'm just so happy to be able to order them before winter.

Count me in! I lurk and learn for the most part, taking a glance every day at the forum. I'm a member, have read the posts about the brackets, and am ready and willing to pay. I have even seen the brackets in person on Rob's 500 so I know they are quality. Well done...!

I will follow along to see how it goes and will be ready to send payment as needed.

Thanks for doing this!
