My Godson has just graduated from college and is going traveling in England. From there he wants to get an around the world ticket. A few questions it used to be that you could get some of the cheapest around the world tickets in London. Is that still the case. Also depending on where he goes from England he'll need some immunizations. Can he get them there and what would be an approximate cost. You guys have that whole gap year traveling things for kids so i'm assuming it's still cheaper than here. Thanks

Judy, I think these days we use high st shops to get our tickets - so your godson would need to go Trailfinders who would help him. They are on the web so he could talk to someone here over the internet about a deal before he even got here!
As for jabs, I think years ago you used to be able to get them from our NHS doctors for a nominal cost (a few pounds). I don't think non nationals can use the system like that anymore. He can go to one of the central London hospital travel clinics - say Charing Cross, Royal Free or University College and get them there. Rough prices for nationals and non nationals below. I hope he has a great time and be extremely careful for werewolves. There is no jab for those. Hepatitis A £48 Typhoid £25 Revaxis (Diphtheria/ tetanus/polio) £26 Influenza £20 Hep A + typhoid £74 Hep A and Hep B £60 Yellow Fever £48 Rabies £45 Japanese encephalitis Please ask Hep B £35 Tick-borne encephalitis £60 Meningitis ACWY £45 Cholera £25

Holy shoot! Those immunization prices seem high. My health plan here (in the states) has a travel desk you consult before trips. You tell them where you are going, they tell you what you need and arrange for you to get it (both immunizations and emergency medications to carry with you). Surely that would be cheaper and more certain than a walk-in clinic in London - at least if your godson has stateside health insurance coverage. The US State Dept also has an excellent website containing information about health risks in various parts of the world.
I think WW has it right on tickets as well. Everything is searchable on line these days. Comparison searching will turn up the best deals. |

Thanks so very much for the info WONDER 8) 8) Since he needs almost every shot i feel sorry for him. Prices seem less for some and more for others. Weird. He just graduated from college and really should of gotten some stuff taken care of before he graduated. I'm gonna tell my friend she has to get him covered under her insurance or something before he sets off. More than i've liked i've come back sick, with an unknown form of malaria heading the top of the list. I'll call him later with the info. He's probably already found Trailfinders after i told him yesterday about buying a ticket from England. I haven't looked lately to see what the exchange rate is. Thanks a lot or Mahalo as they say here. DOOGLAS he's not insured. He will be now that i know he's not. I go to my travel medicine clinic also.

I think however Hep A and B combined is still free as is tetanus. In reality you might still be able to get those even if you are a non resident.
It depends on how attractive your godson to the nurse - and this could be a valuable life lesson in interacting with other cultures. Being young, attractive, smiling and polite will get you tons of free things here. |

WONDER he does modeling in his spare time. In fact he might have a gig with Abercrombie and Fitch for some pics before he leaves Blond, tall surfer boy with a great body from being on USC Irvines water polo's team My goal in life is to live long enough to kid him about his beer belly when he gets older but alas i'll be 6ft under by then I'll have to figure out how to haunt him from the great beyond.

Where's the boy travelling in England Judy ? If he's an A and F model I think my youngest girl would happily show him around |

60 i don't know where exactly but he's a looker. He might enjoy having your daughter escort him around. He's a really polite nice kid. A rarity these days. Thanks for the extra info. He's loving the site WM advised and now yours should keep him busy. I'll give a shout when he gets it all figured out.

My kids always got their shots from the County Health department, a lot cheaper than a private doctor.....Have him check out their prices.....
Just got back from Scotland and England.....Have him get train passes online, before he leaves.....my daughter gets them for 1/2 price if below the age of 25......She stayed in hostels, my bride and I stayed in B and B's...hostels are a lot cheaper, have him bring a padlock for his chest they have at the hostel.... Lots of places to see, a lot of tourist traps.... I had problems with my credit cards, even after informing the creeps before I left...the fraud department automaticly stopped my charges..... Have him get coverage with his cell phone before he leaves, get an electric adapter before he goes, or get a cheap prepaid phone when he is there....and if he loses it, no sweat....Make sure he keeps his passport on him at all times, my daughter lost hers...missed her flight, but she bought flight insurance.....that saved her bacon.... A map of Europe should be bought, it helps with planning and travel around... Reservations at popular hostels are nice, but they will stick you for one nights stay, even if you show up, and can't stand the smell at the front desk....I would check out the ratings of every place he intends on staying...some of them are pits....Summer is the high season, fall and spring are just as nice, but a lot less crowds.....and cheaper prices.... But, just about everything over is more in Europe than the states....

Oh he'll get his beer belly then. Plenty here, even better in Belgium, superb wine in France.... other things in Amsterdam.
A few years ago I assisted a very toasted young man from San Francisco on the tube, he asked for directions to Saturn so I put him in a taxi because he was so mullered from everything. He was terribly nice but incoherent. I dispensed him into a black cab at Victoria, paid the driver and sent back him to his hotel. He would not have found it otherwise! Doubtless he had no recollection the next morning....it is great being young! |

WM isn't it tho. I think he'd enjoy drinking more over in your neck of the woods if he was under 21 because it's illegal here? You think your getting away with something. Being over 21 not so much
