This is a wonderful informative place. I learn new things everyday!!!

I have been on motorcycles all my life, but it wasn't until I joined the scooter community a few months ago that I have decided to go out and get a nice helmet.... thanks to all of you and your concern for safety.

Now that I have... I have a question regarding storing your helmet if you do not have a Top Case and your Pet Carrier is always full. How would I be able to lock down my helmet on a GTS250ie??? Now that I have helmet... I don't want it stolen.

There are two plastic pegs on the frame under the front of the seat. Put the d ring over the peg and close the seat. Don't forget to lock the steering column to disable the seat switch.

If you look under your seat you'll notice two little pegs at the hinge,
Your helmet "D" ring should slip onto one of them and then you can close your seat.

Although, It doesn't always work with all helmets, Thank you Vespa,
Some people have found that an adjustable wrench through the "D" ring
and attached to the peg helps to extend the difference in strap length.

If you don't have a D ring, thread a cheap key ring through the plastic buckle thingy on the helmet strap.

I like that idea, Hadn't thought of that,
Often wondered about those quick release helmet straps.

There are also helmet extenders that work with the quick release buckles like the Nolans have. Check the places that sell Nolan helmets for them.

I purchased a couple - can't remember from where - but the holes were too small to fit over the pegs. The vendor suggested drilling them out, but there was no room for a larger hole.

Using the pegs someone can cut your strap. Hopefully you purchased a full face helmet. if so an easy solution that I use on my scoots and motorcycle is to lock the helmet through the face shield to the bike. works through handlebars on motorcycles or cowl bars or frame loop on vespa.

Thanks Everybody... I thought that might be what the pegs were for, but wasn't sure the seat would close... I didn't want to try and end up with scratches somewhere... still dreading that first scratch.

+1

I place the helmet on the seat and lock it through the rear carrier with a dollar store cable lock. Cheap and handy.

Cheers and good luck,
Bob

The idea is that if they were to cut the strap, they'd end up with a useless helmet, or one they'd have to repair.

Most people who'd do that aren't actually interested in taking your stuff, just in inconveniencing and annoying a random stranger for the heck of it.

That is freaking brilliant. I've been griping about my Nolan and an AGV helmet that I have because I couldn't secure them. Now I can. Brilliant.

The "T-shaped" extenders I purchased from the local motorcycle dealer fit the pegs on my Vespa just fine.

Same here... got a package of two really cheap from JC Whitney, and they work perfectly.

I have a full face Nolan and have found that a dog choke collar works perfect. Just run it through the cin bar and put both rings over the pegs and close the seat... Done!

I use a pair of hand cuffs when I ride my MC. They work well too.
My grlfriend LOVES them.... Laughing emoticon

I posted this some time ago but as you'll see. I've been doing it for a number of years on other scoots. I have a top case so don't do it on the Vespa.

WARNING: Some one a few months back said they used this approach and they somehow broke the helmet peg off!! I was surprised by that but my previous scoots had a metal hook and it was never a problem. Just a heads up.

I have a Nolan N-102 flip up FF helmet that doesn't fit in the top case or pet carrier. I purchased a helmet cable lock at the Harley / BMW dealer. I open the seat, thread the cable lock through the open visor and around the seat where the hinge is, it's a really good fit. Lock the cable, close the seat and bingo, done. The helmet sits more or less like it would if it were hanging from the helmet peg things but it's even more secure. Works like a charm on my LX, should work on the GTS too. The lock cost me $10. The only reasonably inexpensive and useful thing in the whole dealership.

I have a small helmet, so maybe my straps are particularly short. But I barely have enough space to close the seat with the D-ring on the peg. They would be very hard pressed to cut my strap. I also live in an area that doesn't have a lot of crime, particularly against scooters. So I have not been too concerned. I would not leave my helmet, which is a Shoei, on the peg for long. Maybe just to run an errand or eat a meal. I wouldn't do it all day and definitely not at night, if outside.

Most of the time I throw it in the pet carrier...the most convenient & water-tight.

When the carrier's full, I throw it on the peg/hook.

When I have more than one helmet to lock up, I use a short $6 vinyl-wrapped braided steel cable looped through part of the helmet (around the chin bar, through the d-ring, through some loop of webbing...whatever works), and hooked onto the hook/peg.

When I have more than helmets to lock up (like a jacket, pants, or perhaps 2 helmets, 2 jackets, 2 pants) again, I use the same 30" length of braided steel cable, looped through all that stuff & hooked to the bag hook on the scoot, w/ all that crap hanging out either under the seat or between the seat & leg apron.

It also helps with short d-ring straps.

The cable looks like this one.

Any bicycle store would have these. There's also a smaller/thinner one designed for keeping bike seat posts locked onto the frame too, which works great & is very compact.

There are some dunces around me who wear their helmets like a base-ball cap on the top of their head, & only pull them down over their face when they pass the po-po. They look ridiculous. I'm sure some of them wouldn't mind a strapless helmet.

At home, I leave a cheap $30 spare skid lid on the bag hook. It's there for the same reason I leave a few $$ in the tank bag of my motorcycle; it's my tell.

If it's ever missing, I know I've got an opportunistic thief in the neighborhood, & it's time to ratchet up the security. Until then, I'm perfectly happy trusting "security through obscurity." I've got things chained down...but I could take further measures if pushed to.

I parked outside a bar once and secured my helmet on the peg, hanging upside down. When I thought about it later, it looked very much like a bucket and very tempting for some drunken jerk to pee in.

Fortunately they didn't, but I always make sure it's not upside down again.
