Hi there,

I took my recentlly inherited 1978 p200e out in the country. Top speed that I could get was 50ish mph. Is that typical? I was a little terrified(newbie) but if I am going to go on the freeway it would seem that this is not enough speed. Please offer any suggestions.

Thanks,

Randy

Depending on how much work has been done to it. It should go somewhere around 60mph.

Was you speed based on the speedo or a GPS unit? My old P200 was OK with an actulal 55-60 on the flats, no wind, no kitting. The Rally is similar.

im not sure how fast your freeways usually run. in nashville the posted is 70, and people normally hit 90mph+

id recommend against the highway.

There's no way I would drive my Scoots on the highway around here! Just too many ways to get killed by too many different people going too fast...

Everbodys in a rush here it seems.

Well, I guess I am in the zone then. I think that it's pretty stock. It seems kind of all over the place ( not drunk ) at that speed.

thanks

According to the manual, the P200e was capable of a top speed of 72 mph, which does sound a bit optimistic. Have you checked your speed with a GPS? My 1980 P200e would give a speedometer reading of 38-40 mph when it was actually going 50. Because of the design of the speedometer, the P200 is one of the few scooters that actually gives a pessimistic speedometer reading. I'll leave it to someone with more technical savvy than I to explain why.

Yeah GPS it. My P200E is going about 61mph when it reads 55mph. Someone on here reported ~15mph off speedo on theirs.
