....sometimes move off MV to the other URL, and sometimes open a new tab ?

Also, linking to other MV threads, sometimes the thread title appears, and sometimes the full URL ?

Is it browser related, or just me - even when I'd swear to doing it the same way each time.

Just curious.

If a URL is to an unrelated site, AND the URL is entered in the post without enclosing it in the
[url]...[/url]
BBcode tags, THEN it will open a new window (in IE at least).

Otherwise it'll open in the same window - which I personally find mostly irritating, as I tend to close that and then have to start again...

The way around this is to always click on links with the <Ctrl> key pressed - then the URL will always open in a new tab. Simples!

And for those on a Mac, hit the Command key when you click on a link to open the link in a new tab in both Safari and Firefox.
Best

Just testing the other point:

"Also, linking to other MV threads, sometimes the thread title appears, and sometimes the full URL ?"

to see if pasting the URL within a sentence, or dropping a line, makes any difference.

If I paste the link New horn installed! (Post 942257) within a sentence, it appears like this.

If I drop a line it appears like this.

New horn installed! (Post 942257)

So that made no difference.

Still puzzled then why sometimes the thread title itself appears as a link, and sometimes (as in the above) it's the full URL.

If you use the topic BB code with topic242257 enclosed in square brackets you get this: [topic242257]

Arrrgh!!!! Can't do anything just so on my Ipod. I'll get to my Mac and do that properly.

PS: [NSR] Why do links in MV threads..... OK so, I finally got that to work. I don't know why it wouldn't work from my Ipod... maybe because the topic number was bogus? Who knows. Probably I was half asleep. Just put the word "topic" in square brackets with the topic number immediately following with no space between, and BINGO, it shows a topic link. Phew!! tougher than I expected. Nerd emoticon

Well how do you get the link to be changed to a set word, usually in a different colour within a sentence?

Well what I really mean is it easy to do?

The answers to all these questions are in the FAQ under BB code.

It's relatively easy (if anything with computers is relatively easy) but then I couldn't get the topic linking to work.

So here goes... to link to a topic see topic linking.

To add a URL like the above but as link text click here and go to the heading "Link with title".

It gets really complicated to explain in a post how to use BB code or html without the code actually doing its magic and showing the result rather than the process itself. Fortunately someone smarter than me (Jess & Co.) did a wonderful job of that in the FAQ. If I were that capable I would have shown how to do it here rather than posting links.

Thank heavens there's always more than one way to skin a cat (cat lovers please forgive me, and imagine that I wrote [name of your least favourite fruit or vegetable]. Sorry vegans.

So let's see...

For example, I want to link to topic27538.

I key topic27538 enclosed with [ ] and it appears as

Too much junk in the trunk - Fixing the LX seat latch

Excellent

What's weird though is I've simply pasted the URL before, and sometimes it posts as such, and other times it just shows the thread title.

Thanks for clearing this up. Shoulda thought about the FAQ's
