Modern Vespa

not quite following their logic with naming it the super... historically, the super that came about in the 60's was the basic entry level model that used up a lot of older parts bin parts. don't get me wrong, i adore my 1974 super and it's 8 inch wheels, but it seems kinda counterintuitive to name their modern flagship the same. figured they would have brought back the legendary GS or SS name, if anything. discuss...

They are using the Super Sport name again. The GTS 300 Super is now avalable in Titanium with SuperSport badging. So, looks like they were thinking along the same lines as you are.

IMHO, the 1960's/1970's Super was really kind of misnamed... if anything, the Rally should have been the model to inherit the "Super" moniker from the SS180, which was its direct predecessor. But that's all ancient history now, it is what it is, and we got what we got.

Because that's exactly what super means in Italian: the top. Über. Superior.

If it was used for the opposite back in the day, then you should have asked that question then

I think they're pulling names out of the parts bin in an attempt to use up remaining inventory.

IMO, the 300 Super is not top of the line, it's just another stylish "S" model. The standard 300ie has the same engine and goes just as fast, rides smoother and doesn't have a seat that feels like a plank, includes a rack and costs less. So, what is super about a Super... black wheels?

If you wanna get all technical, it's the GranTurismoSport Super.

And then you have the GranTurismoSport, the GranTurismoVintage, and the modern GranTurismo that started the line. We're too lazy these days to put up with such long names all the time, I guess.

The current smallframes aren't as easy to make words out of their letter abbreviations, since LX is really just the number 60 in Roman numerals, to correspond with releasing them around the time of Vespa's 60th anniversary. I can't come up with anything creative as far as letters-to-words there. The S could easily be either Super or Sport (though I would guess Sport, so as not to be confused with the current Super).

Super from the Latin meaning "on top".

It's not, the top of the line model now is the GTV 300.
