Yeah, I was thinking it might be an engine issue as opposed to a clutch problem... Despite his description of it being a "clutch issue" - I think it might have something to do with the flywheel/crank. Not my area of expertise, particularly without having a chance to really investigate thoroughly.

Even still - it was a hard deal to pass up. The way I see it, even if a full engine rebuild is required... I'd still be ahead of the game. Right?

Thanks for the head's up! 8)

The guy just sold it this morning. It seemed pretty legit - the guy seemed pretty cool. Someone scored a good deal on it.

Just to let you guys know... this was/is completely legit. I have this '76 Rally sitting in my garage - definitely not a nammer bike (few Rally's were, as far as I have heard/seen/read). Body is in great shape - it's been repainted professionally, and I can't find any signs of bondo. It runs, rides, looks great & has a clean title/registration... the couple who sold it were really nice people - and they were happy it was going to a good home. It's going to be a perfect partner for our '74 Rally 200.

Known issues thus far...
1 - Clutch noise - starting from a stop, when letting the clutch out into 1st gear - there is a mild grinding noise. I'm going to have to investigate this week when I have more time. I checked to see if there was anything clunking around behind the flywheel when I pulled the clutch... but it was perfectly quiet. Thoughts?
2 - Nose dive on this scoot is really an issue. I'm going to go pick up one of the new BGM dampers.
3 - Speedo is original (mph), but non-op. I'll prob have to replace the speedo cable & pinion gear.
4 - Left set of handlebar controls (horn, lights, etc) needs to be replaced... horn is non-op. It's still DC, so I may decide to convert it to AC, like the '74 Rally.
5 - Not really an 'issue', but the old oil injection system has been removed. It's been converted back to pre-mix... which is kind of a bummer, but no big deal.

It's in great condition & is only going to get better from here on out. Thanks, Dom for the head's up - I owe you one!

If we can get it running properly in time, it will hopefully make a cameo at SF Classic.

Photos & a status update
Hey, thought some of you on here might be interested to see some photos of the new '76 Rally 200, alongside my '74.

Since I picked this up at the beginning of the week, I've done the following:
- Replaced the clutch
- Began the process of rebuilding the old one (just waiting for new steel plates)
- Added a BGM damper to the front fork to fix the notorious Rally nose-dive issue. What a difference!!
- Cleaned the whole scoot, checked it for leaks, tightened some loose connections & replaced missing bolts/screws
- Swapped out the DC horn from my '74 (which is AC, so the horn doesn't work on that bike)... now I have a horn that sucks, but works!

Cheers

haha, no kidding! I'm definitely going to be removing both handlebar mirrors. Aside from looking ridiculous, the right one vibrates so much that it won't stay in position & you can't see anything in the other one because it's so shaky. hehe

Every scoot I've ever had, has ended up mirrorless... but I was thinking about adding a knee-height mirror on the leg shield. Are those actually functional? They look better than the handlebar mirrors IMHO - and as much as I like the clean look... having 1-2 mirrors isn't such a bad idea for safety's sake.

Yeah, I like the look of the leg shield mirrors over the handlebar too, but I really am a control freak and like to see what the hell is going on behind me, as well as in front. I find I can see in the handlebar mirrors with peripheral vision as well as when I specifically need to look. Whereas, the knee high ones at best only work when I am specifically looking, and not much even then... So I still use two handlebar mirrors instead. Sacrifice some aesthetics for safety-and I don't think they look that bad. You might be able to see if you can get shorter ones if you still have enough clearance to see past your shoulders/arms. But as always, its yours, do what you want. For the vibration, you probably need Lock nuts...

Re: legshield mirrors, most are too wimpy in my opinion. I would try to find a set of original Ulmas or here is another nice option in my opinion, they seem much sturdier than most of the others + the euro is down right now... - http://www.scooter-center.com/scoweb/pages/productdetail.grid?product=288621642979984&category1=C&category2=CAT&lang=en

Those mirrors do look a little more sturdy - haven't seen 'em in person though. You're right - most leg-shield mirrors are really flimsy. Any recommendations from members with first-hand experience are greatly appreciated.

I suppose the other option would be to mount other handlebar mirrors that aren't quite as ridiculous.

Those are repro Ulmas (kinda) - I think I remember someone on one of the boards posting that these were actually pretty nice, well chromed, etc... caution though... there is a left and right on these, so if you order them make sure you get the right one. On that note I think I am going to get one for either my VBB or 90, will report back...

If you want to try these out let me know in the next couple days and maybe we can combine the shipment... No pressure though 8)

The problem with leg shield mirrors is all it takes is that one time to forget that their there and f#*k there's a nice wrinkle. It happens more then you think.
