Hi we are planning a 4 day road trip in Sept across scenic Rt 6 in PA . I am probably taking a backpack I just bought as my main storage. I'd like to get a waterproof/resistant sack or cover to keep my stuff dry in case of a downpour any ideas where I can get one at a decent price?

Some I've seen at outdoor stores were $35 thats more than the backpack was!

Walmart has a large, yellow dry bag. I paid $14.99 for it in Atlanta; they didn't have them at my local store.

Are you looking for a pack cover? While bicycle camping I used to keep my stuff in plastic bags & dry sacs, but didn't worry if the pack/pannier itself got wet, as long as the contents were dry & I rode in some heavy flooding the road rainstorms.
REI has dry sacks starting at $9 & up.
Canadians have MEC where pricing starts at the $11.

Enjoy!

If you're wearing the sack, that makes it harder to seal it. If you're not wearing it, heavy duty trash/leaf bags cost a lot less than $35.

+1

I went this route going to Amerivespa. I just tucked the garbage bags underneath the bungee net on top of my bags. That way, if it started to rain, I could quickly stop and put my bags in the garbage bags. I would have to unhook the bungee nets first, probably. Don't keep them under the seat with your bags secured on the back of the seat, or you won't be able to get to them in time I almost did this at first. I did not get rained on, so I don't know how effective they would be.

+1 on the Seal line. Take a look at kayak/canoe supply sites for a vast array of dry bags of pretty much any size or shape you can imagine.

+1 on the Kayak stores.

Seal Line bags are also available at Aerostich.

I've also packed stuff in Ziplock garment bags, which come in a variety of sizes.

And the heavy duty trash bags work just fine, too.

I'm planning to ride route 6 myself this summer, as soon as I get a chance.
I'd like the see the Pa Grand Canyon. Never been there before.

I only know the eastern part of Rt. 6 from going to visit my grandparents in the '60s and '70s before I-84 was built. Very pretty stretch of road. I'm sure it'll be a great ride.

Agree with much of the above. A good pack cover isn't (shouldn't) be cheap but is unlikely to work well on a scooter trip anyway.

Either do it right with good (likely expensive) equipment or go the garbage bag route. For one time use you can't go wrong with some good trash bags and maybe some extra large zip-lock bags to keep water out of stuff.

Have fun,

Desi B.

Seem like good options, the site also sells a bunch of random stuff that might be useful on a long trip.

NRS is a premier seller I used in the days of guiding trips with my wife. 25 years later they are still selling great stuff. I still buy my lashing straps form them. Real gear for full time warriors.
