I'm having a tough time sourcing 5-40 wt. engine oil, for my 2005 GT200L with 5,300 miles but 10-40 is readtly available. What's the thinking of substuting 10-40 for 5-40 in a San Francisco Bay area climate?

Go to Walmart and buy some Shell Rotlla Full synthetic 5w40. It's around $20 a gallon and meets all of the standards for your scooter.

It's a bit harder to find than 10W40, but most of the big auto parts chains (AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc.) carry either the Shell Rotella or Castrol 5W40 fully synthetic that meets the Vespa specs.

Motul 300v is incredibly good (double ester) and can be snagged at nice shops like Scuderia. Amazon has it as well, jus checked for you.

All those other oils named above are just fine -- as is Amsoil 5w-40 (used by LOTS of bikers...look for a local Amsoil dealer) -- but I decided to "go Italian" and ordered some Agip 5w-40 synthetic from America Agip:

http://www.americanagip.com/

You can't buy less than one case (can't order just a couple of liters), but I wanted a case anyway. And, of course, they have other oils for Vespa needs. Shipping is high, but fortunately, I don't have to buy a case very often!

Good luck...
