Last winter, I tried on a pair of UGG boots "just for fun" and left the store 250USD poorer. I wore them all through winter till April and even some days in May, whenever temperatures were below 12C, any chance I could get! ;P

I decided to check out the New Arrivals on the UGG website.. and clicked on this thinking they might work for scooter riding (looked secure in the photo).
http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductDetails.aspx?gID=w&productID=5678&model=Kensington

And whaddya know, they're actually made for motorcycling! I'm in love! They must be so snuggly (and if anyone here thinks UGGs are hideous, you haven't put your feet in a pair yet, have you? it's like walking on a sheepskin rug all day)

shame i haven't any other gear for winter riding (yet). My mesh jacket from Spidi is even a tad bit too breathable for the Zurich summer (ranging from 15-25C, today was 20C).

just because something looks like a motorcycle boot and is called a 'motorcycle boot' doesn't mean it's actually made for motorcycling, unfortunately those look lovely but i doubt they're as protective as proper motorcycle boots.

that said .... i have been known to wear my UGGs on the scooter

Dang, and there I thought I would be super safe wearing these boots! But they're certainly more secure than my low Bailey UGGs (which slip off really easily). I'll definitely be on a look out for them just to try them on for fun ;p

it's hard to tell how sturdy something is just by looking at a picture - who knows, they may be very well built - i just wanted to flag up the nomenclature issue. there are a lot of 'motorcycle' boots out there that are styled like motorcycle boots but are really flimsily built and not designed to stay on your foot if you come off. UGGs are put together pretty well, so if it's just for pootling around town they'll probably be ok - as would anything that covers your ankle, has a reasonably stiff sole, and won't shred on contact with the tarmac.

Well, until 9 months ago, I thought they were downright UGLY too!!! And then my sis told me to just try them on and that they would "grow on me". Well, the moment I got them on, I couldn't get them off :p I took them home straightaway! I have wide feet so I usually have real problems finding comfortable shoes. and UGGs are just plain comfortable. Now I have two reasons to look forward to winter: snowboarding, and wearing my UGGs! On the down side, I would never ride my Vespa in the rain or snow, not enough confidence for that.

No worries Genie. I'm known to sport Birkenstocks on occasion Nerd emoticon Comfy must win over style at times. I think my big issue is that I see women wearing them with otherwise stylish outfits for a night on the town & think to myself WTF!

I understand the search for the perfect combination of safety, fashion and comfort.

I have two pairs of Harley Davidson boots:

http://www.harleydavidsonboot.com/lahadaribo.html

And a pair of pink sketchers hiking boots that are unbelievably sturdy. Not the most comfortable, but I have been wearing them for years. I can't even find a photo of them online, they are so old!

Found myself at a stoplight next to Mario Batali, him on his Vespa. How did I know it was Mario Batali? He was wearing bright orange Crocs.

Actually did a bit of lane-splitting with him down the West Side Highway, Crocs and all...

Had a pair of Harley D boots -- the old fashioned "engineer boot" slip-on type. Comfortable for riding, if not for walking, since they tended to slip in the heel.

Tipped over on my motorcycle crossing Monarch Pass in Colorado. Just a 10mph tank slapper in three inches of snow at the summit. High ankle sprain, left side. Boot might have helped, but I doubt it. Didn't provide any support after the fact either.

Riding down I-70 in western Missouri a couple of weeks later, I saw a billboard for a boot store advertising 19,000 pairs of in stock. Found a pair of Ariat's that lace and buckle offering lots of support, comfort, protection, etc. Ugly, but wonderful. Check 'em out: http://www.ariatbootstore.com/product/39975

My horseriding boots that im using for scootering are Ariats- not sexy but very sturdy. I wear sneakers most of the time though- it's too troublesome to bring extra shoes to work for a 10minute ride (bad attitude)! Would love those Uggs but I don't think I can afford them right now!
I'm thinking about getting a scooter jacket suitable for winter, I like the Tucano jackets but they are in grey brown black tones - not as visible as the bright red I am wearing now (spidi motorbike mesh jacket, I think people laugh when they see me climb onto a vespa instead!!!) belstaff leathers are gorgeous but so expensive

Those do look lovely boots - if you get to try some on, let us know your thoughts!

Here are some more boots which are called 'biker' but probably wouldn't be very safe on an actual bike. I still really fancy them though.

These are far "hotter" than the motorcycle style. I saw these at Bloomingdales over the weekend and nearly broke out my card for purchase. It was hard enough trying to get the pair of Nike trail runners I had just purchased home on the LXV though I couldn't possibly have taken another pair of shoes home the same day.

http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductDetails.aspx?gID=w&productID=1917&model=Jillian

Most of my riding is done in a pair of converse or some keens though.

Man you guys in the US get things so cheap. My Bailey buttons were 150 pounds (bought in London) and priced around 250CHF here in Zurich. The website listed them as only 150USD! The riding boots must cost 350CHF here, if I can actually find them!

These are very un-UGG-like: http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductDetails.aspx?gID=w&productID=1942&model=Maxene

I don't think I can walk in those heels (hence why I love my chunky broad flat Bailey buttons )

These are cute! http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductDetails.aspx?gID=w&productID=1932&model=Caspia
Those laces wouldn't hold up in a crash.

Going for a 10 min ride down to my acupuncture appointment, and I might even try some evening riding tonight back up to uni. Have not tried riding at night yet, and I probably shouldn't try.... in Onitsuka Tiger sneakers today

UGGS on women are the equivalent of brown sandals and black socks on men: it may be comfortable but you don't wear it out of the house.

For a jacket try the GoGo Gear line, as for the boots any sturdy boot will work that has some ankel support.

Uggies
I have a pair of Ugg boots, but they are EMU brand, because I heard that the UGG brand is American...

That's like finding out that Rolls Royce isn't made in England- oh wait.

I wear them during winter - but only in the house.

There are some people who think it's fashionable to wear them with denim skirts or other styles of fashion.

It's wrong.

I honestly used to hate them but now i think they can look pretty cute! I wouldn't match them with anything elegant like the second picture, but I like mine with skinny jeans and a casual tshirt. It's like a winter pair of sneakers, but cuter and much warmer.

In Australia traditional Ugg boots are Bogan footwear. This is our version of trailer trash. You see these people wearing them summer winter and fall. Usually with tracksuit pants with frayed heels while puffing on a cigarette and yelling at their ratty kids as they stand in line for a carton of beer. There are all kinds of Ugg boot jokes.
Spoils it badly. You get ribbed if you wear them.

That said I went to the website link and was very impressed with the male harness strap brown boot. Looks nothing like an Ugg and I think I can get away with that.

By the way dont bother to lecture me about worrying what other people think. I think the same. You can only see so many dirtbags doing something before it is ruined for you.

Is there a US or Brit trailer trash (bogan) footwear?

I think in the UK it's Nike/Reebok sneakers - the bigger the logo, the better! Add Nike/Reebok sweaters and trackpants (don't forget the large logos), gold hoop earrings, and the look is complete. Then again, I may be completely outdated because it has been 5 years since I lived there.

the Reebok classic trainer is standard chav issue in the UK. the whiter the better, and double bonus points if it's got chrome parts.
