I know people liked the link I posted to the vintage photos of London, so here's some from the US in the early 40s...

Great post, thanks for the share! Great shots.
(BTW-wonder if it was coincidence that the PBR slide (#52) found its way in there, given the audience here...of a bunch of scooterists. PBR being the near-official beverage for some (many) scooterists through the years!) |

Beautiful shots.
I am not a luddite by any means, but I'm afraid that with the passing of Kodachrome, we've lost a bit of our ability to capture life. This is an incredibly touching and timeless shot . . . I imagine it brings a smile to most parents' faces: http://denverpost.slideshowpro.com/albums/001/496/album-125171/cache/color015.sJPG_950_2000_0_75_0_50_50.sJPG?1281011079 |

I just happened to look at the 1940 city directory that I've got the other day.
There were 13 barbershops and 26 grocery stores in town. Now we have 2 barbershops and 2 grocery stores. |

Yes, the colors are exaggerated and oftentimes not true to the subject. BUT. The photos have a dreamlike quality that, in my mind are akin to memories themselves. In the hands of the right person, Kodachrome had the innate ability to capture the soul of the subject. That's not to say it doesn't happen in digital photography. It does. It's just that a set of tools has been removed from the artist's supply box--that's what I lament. |

Film was expensive, especially during the war, and you didn't get to see what they looked like until you developed and printed the shots (again an expensive process). Every shot was planned and lighting was considered and taken into account during the process of taking the shot. It wasn't just a cell-phone quickie shot. It was a planned, careful process. |

Same reasoning that some people still prefer old school, carbureted, manu-shift scooters....they offer something, that a modern, digitally fuel-injected scooter may not provide to their scooting experience. Different strokes. |
