WOW!
I finally get to see one withe the yellow boots! First one for me! Why yellow though? I mean.... why not red or blue? something that matches one of the tow tones! They get dirty so quickly... I would have picked a different color. But that's just me and I am Italian.... |

A tricky One
Spotted on CL, this Sprint doesn't have any of the hallmarks of a straight bodge, and possesses some known ownership history which is why I am aware of it's "import" status. Apparently, this Sprint is an Indonesian version. While there are some odd additions to the bike, there is no aspect that screams bodge. I'm going with a friend to see it on Monday, she's interested in a vintage scoot. PO to this one rode it for 2 years with no issue. Any thoughts from the community on this?

Didn't end up checking the scoot out with my friend. She decided that if she is to get a scoot in addition to her MC than it needed to have less than questionable pedigree. I'm sure the scoot is nice, but the stars didn't align for her on this one.

How do you get that smooth curve off the back of the tank to the tail? Is that custom or just that model of Allstate?

The paint job is almost too nice thats what may throw some people. I had that same thing happened when I color sanded a scoot people that didn't know what to look for asked me if it was from overseas.

Hey, all. New member, first post. I did get a bike from Vietnam (ex pat owned business) 3 months ago and have 300km on it so far, and it runs really good. I used a magnet all over and it sticks well. Any other pointers?

Ex-Pat owned isn't your ticket to happy trails. Have you heard of Avalon Scooters for example? Some of the ex-pats out here to make a quick buck on re-selling bodges have no idea about scooters and no moral compass.
300km's is too early to be saying anything about the mechanicals. 3000km's and the engine hasn't self destructed might be a good sign. You might have got lucky with the body, Sprints are fairly plentiful here, some good, some horrible. Take the tank out and have a look for poorly welded plates in and around the rear shock mount. Filler around the cowel bottom edges and hook attachment points. Welded hub links on the front. Look at the carb. If its an original Dellorto its most likely bodged in some way, Spaco Dellorto it will have the wrong jets and you are not going to get away with that for too long. Have a look and post what you have. Export bodges look bodgey but some people dig that and don't like the original look so no point telling you aesthetically what's wrong with your scoot. You probably ordered it that way because that's what you wanted, it's your money. |

There is very little preventative maintenance in Vietnam. Nothing gets fixed until its broken. At that point you are at the hands of whichever guy is closest to try and fix it. They get bodged. It'll work after a fashion but not for long. On Lambrettas the carb mouth mill be shimmed up with a tin can after years of slopping about on the manifold. I threw my original Dellorto away, wish I'd kept it now to show you. It had some weird hole drilled in the body that was later filled with lead. God knows why.

Ok, I will, when the tank is closer to being empty, I just filled it. Im not overly mechanically inclined and I will try and figure out where the carburator is. I did have a motorcycle mechanic do a look over and he felt that it was kosher, but I am not sure he knows scooters. There are not that many yespa scooters her where I live, never mind old scooters. So thanks for the advice!

Plenty of guides on here and elsewhere. If you can get the cowel off (side panel), the carb is in that box that looks like a small biscuit tin on top of the engine. Undo the two screws bolt things, lift the cover off and now you see an air filter on top of a carb. Undo those two screws, lift the filter off and you now have access to the carb. The jets in question are those two brass coloured things roughly in the middle. Un screw them and look for tiny little numbers on them.
good luck. |
