Im really kinda confused. And this is not some humorous question, Im serious. Who would spend over 5k on a vintage vespa and not do a small amount of research on them?

And why dont any of the sellers try to un-asian them a little bit? ie. put 8 inch wheels on, get rid of some of the stupid two tone paint and seats, get rid of the yellow stand boots etc....? It seems lazy.

Simply because they don't know enough to not buy it in the first place, so why would they go through any more trouble? There are plenty of people out there to think a bodge is great but will never do their research.

Because they are not trying to fool people like us who know better - they are trying to fool an unwitting impulse buyer who will be blinded by all the chrome and "full restoration" shinyness.

Because the less you know about a subject, the more you think you do.
Seeing the shiny new paint, the chrome all over, and the fact that it will start when kicked, unless you know better, you don't care.

Ignorance is bliss, right up until the point you're aware of it.

Okay, to the non-Vespisti, that is kind of a novel feature. I've heard motorcyclists whispering in hushed tones to each other about exactly this "feature" upon encountering a parking lot full of vintage Vespas.

Yeah, I guess so... It just seems odd that anyone would buy an expensive vintage bike without even so much as five minutes of research. And the sellers know they are selling a shit wagon dont even try to hide it.

Its as if the sellers and buyers are perfect for eachother. A simple case of dumb people finding eachother.

Absolutely!! I don't copyright, my work is public domain 8) Seriously though, if I hadn't found my way to MV and Scooterlounge I could have been had like that. Except that I didn't have enough money to afford a bodge lol...
But still, fuck that guy.

I like this line:

The motorcycle shop on Monterey St. assured me they are genuine Vespas not some chinese knock offs

Mass chrome, funky seats, the wings, gas tank gasket, not from China but they are "Fresh off the boat."

Vespa knock-offs at best.

Got this coffee mug from her a couple weeks ago. I'm waiting for the handle to fall off while it is filled with blazing hot liquid. Probably lead painted too. maybe I can advertise it on CL as "original restored"

looks ok from the photos. but since its from egypt i would be wary of very high miles.

most 2nd and 3rd world bikes were driven hundreds of thousands of miles since most were daily runners.

i would want more detailed looks in undersides and insides. dont trust the odometer either.
