Avoid the first one & maybe dicker a bit for the second one if you're looking. Even pay what he's asking if the parts he has with it look good. I'll PM you my info and you can PayPal me the penny. Thanks.

Headaches with both. First too expensive and seller appears sketchy (why the pic of new speedo?). Second pieced together and no title. Pass.

First one - no. Too many bad things going on there.
Second - If you want the project, maybe. He admits it's a collection of parts he had laying around and does not mention what kind of shape the donor engine is in. Not a bad price if you did not have to do much buying, that is. if all the parts there to build a complete scoot. If you are not careful, it could turn into a money hole.

I wouldn't mind a project to be honest, but yeah the "missing a few misc. parts" sentence is worrisome. That could turn into a few bucks. I'm on a nationwide search (well, at least west coast/midwest) for something nice that I can afford.

Still waiting for your paypal info, Voodoo. This penny is burning a hole in my pocket.

We should do a bodge spotting thread for potential wifes/girlfriends.

We could all let each other know if there is a potential bodge out there!

The hard part is, there is usually no way to tell until you put a few hard miles on her and the paint begins to flake off.

For plausibly PC clarity, and to avoid a complete thread hijack, I'd nominate "bidgespotting" as a moniker for a thread where these observations, postings, and analyses are kept. Other nominations, are, of course, welcome.

Not sure about this one: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/mcy/4430895389.html The spare tire cover, excessive chrome, and floor mat raise an eyebrow for me. And, do my eyes deceive me, or is "Vespa" stamped on the front swingarm cover?

This one is obvious: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/mcy/4433466863.html

I'm suspicious that it's actually the same seller, given the identical years, and that they were both worked on at the same shop.

For some people anything over three years old is "vintage". I hate that word. When I see it in an add, I pass it by automatically.

mine .... the paint didnt flake but the engine seems to have gone .... it only runs on idle after alot of time getting it started ... it blows smoke everywhere n makes a god awful noise .... also there seems to be a hell of alot of body filler now n the seat seems overly stuffed and now its covered in shiny add ons trying to hide this

It always surprises me how these same telltale signs have been prevalent for... more than a decade? Two tone paint, Vespa spare tire cover, big floor mat, chrome around the top of the fork tube... I guess I haven't seen the clear yellow center stand boots in awhile. They all have these hallmarks. Is it just one place cranking them out, or is there some bodge checklist that all the "restoration" shops in Vietnam follow?

It would not surprise me if there was a checklist of sorts, these shops play into what people 'think' a vintage scooter looks like, esp with all the chrome and two tone paint. Some resto shops have a list of accessories and colors and the buyer picks what they want.
