AllState, w/ the Sears ID plate intact, still on eights and no shock in front?
I doubt it and where's all the required chrome? Priced a bit high for an AllState but looks to be a very nice restored example. |

I Googled the email address and there several other CL listings for an RV and motorcycles, in various cities, all flagged for removal. |

Definite bodge.
Series 2s are so rare and expensive now, it might actually be a restoration candidate, if cheap enough... It would need to have real TV serial numbers ... and a TV case, if you wanted to do it high quality... Then year it down, sandblast it... Hope there's something decent underneath. |

Hello. I am currently shopping for my first scooter and am feeling uneasy about my ability to choose a good one. Never even heard the word bodge until I started looking and learning. I've been reading forums for a few months and daily watching scooter sale ads both locally and nationwide. Have decided a 1970s P is probably the most practical for me given the info I have read. Would anyone be willing to give me a few tips on buying used from a private owner. My main question is can I get someone to inspect it before purchase? Who would do the inspection? I don't have the background knowledge to be confident I'm not buying a bodge. Thanks for any help you can give me. I've been looking at this '79 PX 150. It's at a local dealership, listed as fully restored in Jan '16, mileage is 10, but the ad says the VIN is N/A. Is that suspect? If you could share any thoughts on it, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I'd be wary of that one.
The price is very high. It's not a US market bike from 1979. They came in 125 and 200cc. They all had oil injection and a plastic fuel tap. It may be a later px 150 or LML Star/Stella rebadged as a Vespa. It's hard to tell. In the restoration, they replaced original pieces and detail with newer ones. |

If I were to guess, that's an Indian LML from the 1990s-2000s, or a bike assembled from misc parts in India.
You can see the front hub (photo) is LML, not ever used on Piaggio. If you want an LML PX, there are lots in the US, you can find cheaper in original condition. They're called Stella here. Here are some real Piaggio Vespa's from that era near you. https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/mcy/6200698870.html https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/mcy/6197183158.html https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/mcy/6169616582.html https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/mcy/6209348842.html ![]() |

Bodgy?
Checking CL this week and there were a couple new local finds. What do you all think? The first one is obvious, maybe, but what about the second one?

Again, thanks! Those are rare in the US. There weren't ever any in California. A few got by as Canadian imports. I think 1985 was the last year for two-stroke Vespas in the US. I saw a bunch of P200s in Minnneapolis, all pretty cheap. |

Lots of pretty shiny scooters out there that look okay to my untrained eyes. Thanks to those who recommended a few in my area. I'm hoping to find a fairly nice looking one (in color, not black, silver, or white) to start with since I will only be able to do routine maintenance, not bodywork. This one popped up today on Craigs, but it looks too shiny and is too cheap for me to think it's legit. The second one is in Chicago and looks better. What do you think? Thanks.

That P200 is about an hour from me. He also has a P125 listed. I'd be curious to know the history of both bikes because the both look legit, but two of them together down to original manufacturer decals almost seems too good to be true.

Yeah, the Chicago Craigs P200 seller also has a nice P125 listed, both ads have identical paragraphs describing the scooters. He has the P125 listed in two locations in Illinois. Might be fishy, might not, but if I'm going to drive that far I want to be real sure it's not a scam. The Super is close by, but Scooterlounge.com, which seems to have the most detailed descriptions of scooters I have found doesn't give a glowing review of that model. Is that website accurate?
