Vespa Vintage - $2200 (Walland)

I bought this scooter on cl a few months ago.I thought i would ride it but I don't Top speed seems to be around 40mph on level ground and may may 50 down hill.I do not believe it is a sixty seven as it was advertised before because of the shape of the tail end.It is rounded more like 50's and 60's models maybe you will know.Anyway the title is for a 67 and the motor numbers match the motorIt is in real good condition.I simply do not want to keep it. It is a 150 super but I thought larger pistons would make a bid difference so I put the big bore 180 cyjinder and piston in it. I can not tell any difference.I still have the stock parts. This scooter os equipped with an electric start as well as kick

I don't have time for this right now, but I can probably list at least 15 reasons why that is not a Rally frame. Look closely. Come on kids, what's wrong with this picture.

anyone notice those photos on that ebay listing are of two separate bikes? on half of them (that show the motor side) the flywheel cover is a chrome 1 vent. On the other half, it's a black 2 vent.

Something isn't right here. Is this just labeled wrong (it's a Rally 180, if it's a 1969, and based upon the script on the legshield), and "equipped" with a bunch of questionable accessories?

ya. definitely a repaint. it's also probably a 72-73. The first two years of the 200's they still had the script badge, according to what Bar Italia told me yesterday.

Aah gotcha. I figured something was off (aside from the accessories) with the year, model, and/or the scoot itself. Guess it was just the year?

i also don't think those accessories are bodge. Those are the vespa servizio badged bars available from allstyles-vepsa-lambretta in the U.K. They're not rare or vintage, just not available in the US, so a lot of people think they're suspect.

Ok so I just saw this really awful bodge post in Houston-

http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/2056149285.html

These are your classic bodges. Chrome where there shouldn't be chrome. Crappy sewn together floor mat. Turn signals mounted all over the place. Shitty fenderlight conversion. All for only $4500.

I hadn't seen this posting before and I do search nearly every day, especially in Texas, and so I decided to do a little searching. The guy Identifies himself as Micah and gives his phone number. I found out that he is the owner of Blackbird design and print shop in Houston. He is trying to sell these as "Vintage Scooter of Texas" although I didn't find anything on that. I did find some interesting info on a site called panjiva.

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking perhaps not a bodge? Maybe yellow booties were added when bike was 'fixed in the UK by Retrospective Scooters'. You don't see them in this (older?) picture.

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

The chrome is not unusual for old British scooters. No wings or sheriff's badges. And the engine side cover could be different because it's a Douglas? I dunno, I'm no expert. Look here, Douglas's are different : http://www.themodgeneration.com/forum/topics/vespa-douglas
Quote:
Vespa models produced by Douglas

"Rod" model 1951-5
"Rod" is retro term referring to gear change mechanism - scooter was marketed as just "Vespa 125" The spec was basically that of the Piaggio 1949 model which had just been replaced. The headlight on British production was moved to the leg shields in deference to local lighting regulations.

"G" model 1953-54
The previous model with a cable gear change

GL2 1954-55
Up-to-date twin transfer port engine installed in the by-now-archaic 1949 style chassis

42L2 1955-56
Parity with Piaggio production at last with newer style chassis and front damper. The headlight was moved to the handlebars

92L2 1956-59
Modifications to the 42L2 mirrored those of Piaggio with a larger fuel tank and other detail differences

102L2 1957
The 92l2 with a 150cc engine imported from Piaggio. Just a handful were made.

152L2 1959-6
A completely new model introduced about a year after Piaggio. The rear of the chassis was constructed in two halves with a seam up the middle, and the engine bearer was now integral with the crankcase. When demand outstripped supply, a quantity of the equivalent Piaggio model (the VNA) were imported.

Sportique 1961-65
Douglas stopped producing 125cc Vespas and built instead a version of the current Piaggio 150cc model - the VBB. In an attempt to halt declining sales, various "special editions" with accessories as standard were produced. 1962 saw (introduction of) the Supreme in silver and the Grand Luxe in gold. 1n 1965, just before production of Vespas ended, came the Grand Tourer in metallic maroon
This guy has 276 transactions & 100% positive rating. He doesn't sound like a bodge seller to me, but as usual, caveat emptor.

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking perhaps not a bodge? Maybe yellow booties were added when bike was 'fixed in the UK by Retrospective Scooters'. You don't see them in this (older?) picture.
Pretty sure it is though. Usually only Vietnam bikes have that wierdo license frame w/lower lip. And for some reason, bodge sellers absolutely LOVE to hang the keys from the helmet hook. This is somewhat inexplicable, but almost always a dead giveaway if any other signs are there. If this is not a bodge, someone has certainly done their homework (and their real work, installing an ignition key in the usual bodgey spot) to make it appear like one.

that's appalling. from a "legitimate" vespa dealership. just goes to show, that there's virtually no relation between the piaggio of old, and the current namesake.

They're not a legit Vespa dealer. They're a shady used car lot that happens to sell Vespas. That bike is a junker that they CLAIM they rebuilt. I think they're actually testing the waters to import bodges.
