If I had that kind of loose change in my back pocket, I would go to Bar Italia for something real. Meanwhile, despite the fact that there are people out there with too much money (and no sense), I think two things stand out: 1) anyone who buys this without doing any sort of research deserves everything they get - a fraudulent POS and an empty handshake from the criminal selling it. 2) That the fact that this can be spotted as a bodge so easily, even from the likes of me, can only make me conclude that Hemmings does not know or care and can only hurt their reputation.
part of the problem is that people that do the good work are booked, sometimes several years out, or they are very selective about the work-- both the job AND the client (I am particularly guilty in this regard) and people want it right now. they've got money burning a hole in their pocket and they are going to buy
something.
the other angle is the actual work involved. when a client expresses interest in a restoration whether they've got a bike or starting from scratch you have to sit down and have a long drawn out conversation and lay bare the actual long and arduous process. people don't want to hear that shit, and they especially don't want to hear that their shit, is... well, shit.
then you've got the whole: oh, these are cute little toys, they don't cost anything. how pretty and shiny. I want that one! I don't care if it's correct it
looks enough like what I want.
finally you have the high rollers that are all: that would look good in the lobby of my office, window of my Italian restaurant, man cave, what have you. there's also the aspect of hey significant partner! look at what I bought for you while I was at the auction!
(don't mind the Ferrari *cough* *cough*)
but agreed, hemmings is doing themselves a great disservice allowing listing such as these. the sleazy independent dealers are just as much to blame, and I'd say even more so because you KNOW that they have to done at least 30 seconds of interwebz searching.
