It gets that cold in LA??

Checkout motorcycle riding gear [First Gear, Joe Rocket, etc]... Aerostich.com has good stuff.

There are lap aprons available for Vespa.

Up here when the temps get below 40* I slip on some ski warm-up pants over my jeans. The kind with full-length leg zippers are most convenient.

well i won't compare it to how cold it gets where some of you guys live, but when you're riding it can get fairly chilly, especially since i'm moving to an area of Los Angeles that gets pretty brisk in the winter (something like high 40s/low 50s).

lap apron (as shown above) or scooter skirt. I've got this Corazzo one and love it:

External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

the lap apron attaches to the scooter, the scooter skirt attaches to the rider. both do an excellent job of keeping your legs toasty.

Brilliantly efficient in cold or rainy weather. I have it installed all winter here in London. More convenient than changing trousers in my case.

And I love the ceremony of taking it down for the summer and admiring the new look of my scooter

Scooter Skirts ( http://www.scooterskirts.com/ ) are great. They clip around you waist and are water resistant and fleece lined
External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text

I generally just toss on a pair of Under Armour rain pants:
http://www.underarmour.com/shop/us/en/mens/apparel/outerwear/rainwear/pid1006067-Men-s-Bead-II-Pant/1006067-001

The water resistant quality helps to cut down the wind chill and they are lined. I bought a size too big and put them on over my work clothes (and I got them out an outlet store for about $50).

The lap apron stays on scooter, and some models have an extendable rear cover you can use to protect your seat from rain during parking time.

The skirt has to be fold and stored under your seat, that's less room for your helmets.

I just ordered one of these yesterday in anticipation of cooler weather....please cooler weather, come soon!

Question for you, how fast have you gone wearing this? Can you ride on a freeway at top speeds without it flapping like bat wings? Any advice?

i've ridden up to about 50mph with the scooter skirt on and no problems - it's stiff enough not to flap. for longer trips where i know i'll be staying at high speeds for extended periods, i wear insulated armoured overpants. i've not heard reports of any significant problems riding with them at highway speeds, although i don't think it's officially recommended.

re. storage: if i've not nothing else under the seat, the scooter skirt goes there when i park up - if there's no room in the pet carrier, i just lock the waist straps under the seat and drape the cover over top of the seat.

I haven't had a car since 1999 so over the last 10 winters I've tried a number of different things. Since I ride a regular motorcycle, the skirt isn't an option, but it does look nice and warm. I've tried long johns, chaps and flannel lined jeans. For me the long johns aren't comfortable to wear all day at work. The chaps... we'll, they are the warmest of the three options, but I'm just not a big fan. The flannal lined jeans are what I like the best. Warm and comfortable enough to wear all day. There are lots of overpants and what not, but I see those as being about as appealing as chaps. I don't like having to put on something over my pants to ride.

i've found that wearing a pair of leggings underneath jeans works wonderfully! they're invisible under your jeans but they offer an extra layer, and if you tuck them into your socks they stop the draft as well as don't show sticking out the bottom of your pants. i'm already secure enough in my manhood to ride a scooter, so borrowing an invisible layer of warmth from my girlfriend's drawer doesn't phase me Laughing emoticon

Keeping your legs warm
It gets cold up here in Palmdale so I keep a pair of oversized Nylon jogging pants in my scoot. I slip them over my levis and keep warm. Another trick is keeping a large black plastic leaf bag handy to place under my mesh jacket to cover my chest and block the wind if it gets cold at night. Both of them are lightweight and can be crushed down taking up very little space. Jack in Palmdale

Or for you colonials, pantyhose Razz emoticon Worked for me when I was working outside in the winter...not sure how beneficial they would be on a bike or scooter though. Worth a try (leg shaving optional)

If it's often cool AND wet, I don't think you can beat a lap apron:
External inline image provided by member with no explanatory text
It may be ugly, but sooo convenient & they keep most of your body dry
You just attach them to the scooter in the fall and leave it on until spring

It's not often wet in LA though, so you might be better off with a scooter skirt
They are cooler-looking

Motorcycle pants also work well, plus they have armor

Hmmm, liking the apron idea a bit better than the skirt to be honest.

Often cool and wet? Check The summer's been shite so far, which makes me more determined to scoot more of the winter. Took the first step today...full-face accident hat

well it very rarely rains here, and on the days it does i'll probably drive because I work as a hostess and thus my appearance is pretty important. I'm liking the idea of the scooter skirt also cuz at my work i'll have to park the scooter under some trees and i can use it to keep anything from falling onto the seat while I'm inside.

One good solution is silk long underwear underneath the flannel lined pants. I spent a winter in Russia and grew to love the silk undies. They're very thin, almost like an outer liner of skin, and as long as they aren't wet they provide the warmth of regular long underwear without any of the bulk. I swear by the stuff.
