I'm selling off all of my VB1 stuff, it's in the classifieds, and in the process decided to break down and sell off a frozen engine in parts.

I've gotten the entire thing disassembled, except for getting the drive axle out of the case.

I'm trying to remove 21898. Is 20593 some sort of locking nut or does it just press fit into the inner and outer bearings?

Thanks for the help.

Put the nut (2098) on backwards to protect the thread of the drive axle and tap with a hammer. It should come out with a bit of taping. If you don't have the gear tree (22902) yet, pay attention to how the drive axle is lined up next to the gear tree. There should be a flat side of the ring on the drive axle. This will keep it from catching on the gear tree (22902).

Part 20593 is threaded, but double check, if memory serves me correct it may be reverse threaded. I used a punch, put it in one of the holes, and taped lightly with a hammer.

That was the method I tried, using a rubber dead blow hammer. But I wailed on it and it didn't budge. The christmas tree is loose and essentially floating around but I can't get it out w/o removing the drive axle.

It may just need more persuasion than I was using.

Someone had obviously been in the engine previously, both due to some of the damage I saw along with the fact that pretty much everything fell apart as I loosened it up. But getting this axle out is being a PITA.

Mine needed a bit of coaxing. You can try the nut and regular hammer method. May give you a bit more coax . Just protect those threads but screwing the nut all the way down just before the axle sticks out.

Thanks, worked perfect. A couple of whacks with a framing hammer and it popped out.

A framing hammer??!!!

I keep a 5/8" solid brass rod that I use as a drift punch for stuff like that. Or get a brass hammer. Steel on steel isn't a great idea. I mean, I'm glad it worked but it's really easy to break something like that.

It was steel on 2 nuts locked onto the threads of the shaft. I wouldn't hit anything I actually cared about.

Just don't miss.
