Next month, I'm going to be going on a somewhat spontaneous trip to meet up with some good friends I haven't seen in years. With enough time to do at least a little planning, I decided to seriously upgrade from the Sony Cybershot my fiance "handed down" to me when he got his Cannon Rebel XTi. The Cybershot was a great little camera... when he bought it over a decade ago. Now it's pretty darn pathetic, when it works at all.

Anyways...
I thought it would be neat to get a little tripod to go with my new camera (decided on the Canon Powershot A495), so I could do group shots with my friends using the timer feature. I've seen the Gorillapod in one camera shop, and thought that might be a neat way to go. Added bonus of having that would mean I could also set up the video feature, and maybe take a few little scootering videos by wrapping it around the front rack or the handlebars (with a safety strap, of course).

So the question to you camera afficianados: Any experience with the Gorillapod as far as scooter shots? Or is there another decent, similar tripod I might want to look at, as well? Looking to stay with a smallish size and price, as I won't be using it all the time anyway..

I always thought that the Gorillapod was a flimsy little thing. Boy, was I wrong. I just looked at the Joby site and the first thing shown on the home page is a pack of scooters with a camera mounted on one of them. That looks like a cool way to go.

The Gorillapod Focus and ballhead might be the way to go. Very versatile and priced right. Anything smaller than the Focus might not support your camera with the vibration and bumps of the road. Do secure a safety cord to the camera itself.

If you have a flyscreen, you can also use a window mount. This option is more secure when riding. Visit www.BHphoto.com

I have a knock off gorilla pod that I bought on Woot awhile back... it's great!

I'd have to assume that the name brand gorilla pod would be just as good if not better.

I've never used it on a scoot (I don't have a scoot yet)... but I don't think it would be secure enough without additional restraints...

I bought a mini trypod at Walmart for around $10. It is telescoping so can be stood on the ground and used. Great help for a time delay picture and don't have to find a hand rail or picnic table to set it on. It is not that much bigger than the flexible style and small enough that it can get lost among the other junk under my seat
