I was riding my BV500 on top of the San Diego Laguna Mountains this afternoon, taking a wonderful twisty ride through the forest overlooking the desert below when IT happened!

Coming out of a turn going about 70 and accelerating up to 80+, a big (and I mean BIG) mountain squirrel ran out in front of me and froze in it's tracks.

There was no time to turn - all I could do was straighten my scooter upright and hold on tight. Being my first experience with this type of thing I was concerned that I was going down as I hit it square on. Well, as you may guess since I'm at home writing this and not in the hospital I didn't crash. My new City Grips under the scooter just went "bump-thump" and on I went. I felt badly for the squirrel, but frankly was smiling for not crashing.

Anybody else had this type of thing happen and do I put a small squirrel sticker in my under seat compartment or bring some seeds up on my next ride and put them in the forest as a thanks to the remaining squirrels for not wiping out?

You'll want to check the scoot for and remains that may have spattered. That stuff can really start to stink. And yes, I vote you go for the squirrel sticker.

Yikes, that must have been scary. I'm really glad you're ok! I haven't had any critters run out in front of me while on scoot (fingers remain tightly crossed on that one) but I did kill a little sparrow with my helmet a couple of months ago.

It scared the shit out of me. I was on my way home from work, going about 60mph down the country road that I travel every day to/from my office. I saw him and two of his little buddies land in the road ahead of me, the other two hopped to the side of the road and out of the way... but not the third one, he tried to get lift off and SMACK. He hit me just over my left eye. It rocked my head back, but I just held on tight & straight and screamed really loud inside my helmet.

(This, by the way was only about 2 weeks after I got my full face helmet.)

I saw him hit the road behind me and his little buddies hop back to see if he was ok. He was still in the same sopt when I went to work next morning. I felt bad for the little bugger. Our scooters are so fast and quiet...

Now if you had been going at the right speed, followed the right defensive cycling practices, read Proficent Motorcycling, and had practiced enough in a parking lot, you would have been able to miss that squirrel. Razz emoticon Kidding. Sorry for the squirrel but when it came down to him or you; you made the right choice.

OK, I admit I was pressing the speed limit just a tad. Though I did remove myself from the city and traffic to an empty wide open road on top of a mountain to go over the 65mph limit. I have no excuse - I killed the poor squirrel while having scooter fun, I am soooooooooooooo ashamed . oops did I smile?

Though, in my defense (for speeding) I believe the dozen or so squirrels I passed on the road that were "four-legs up" were from the slower cagers that tend to crawl through the turns.

All funning aside, I am really glad the scooter didn't slide out over the squirrel and go down - really glad.

I hit one myself back in June. I had just turned onto the main drag, he ran out & then Bump Bump! I had a friend get paralyzed years back when he swerved to avoid a squirrel. I took that lesson to heart & never swerve for squirrels. I knew I'd hit one someday, but at least it took 20 years. may it be another 20 before I do it again

I almost hit a baby (or just very small) grey regular-old squirrel today, but he wizened up, turned tail, and ran back the way he came about 0.5 seconds before his demise...

I just read a post on the "Squirrel Forum" about how bad scooter riders are and that HD riders are much more concerned about safety. Go figure.

(Give me a break and don't take the cheap shot of "Figured you would be reading the "Squirrel Forum")

About a year ago I had a bird swoop down from my left and almost hit me while I was riding my MP3. That is the closest I came to hitting or getting hit by a bird or other animal in my short time riding.

Had I been cornering low and tight on a Harley I'd never have been able to pull it upright in time, but given the size of a Harley the results would probably have been similar. (the last expression the poor guy had..........)

I hit at least 5 or 6 birds in my van, at night I ran over a dead deer that I didn't see until the last minute. Clipped a deer on the front portion of my bumper as it ran out in front of me at night again, I also had on run into my right rear tire. I also ran over a skunk once, that stunk. And nearly hit two bears within about a three month period of time.

The one near miss I definitely didn't expect was the one I had with a cropduster. Wha? emoticon He just didn't give me right of way on the road. My heart stopped for what seemed like minutes when I realized how close I came to getting clipped by his wing.

Pretty tough to miss one by swerving when you don't know where it is haeded. They seem to change directions about 6 times a second changing their mind about how to get out of the way. I've nailed a few and non-event for the ride and just hitting with a tire does not splatter pieces onto the ride.

I've had a few near misses with Rabbits, and I've hit a few birds, including one massive seagull that scared the hell out of me (I use an open face helmet, but luckily I had goggles on!) but cos i wasn't going very fast, mostly down to the fact that you can't on a 50cc, both parties emerged fine if a little surprised!

I hit one this summer on my way up my street in the middle of town.

At the time I remembered the Appalachia saying " if you can eat it in one sitting hit it, if not better try to miss it."

Mmm tree rats.

I've hit close to a dozen (all squirrels) over the last 41 years when riding a PTW and at least three of them were on the same road where you hit yours. There are thousands of the little rascals who live in those woods and they are prone to run out of nowhere and you have little choice but to hit them or risk putting your own life in danger. Glad to hear that you didn't panic and run off the road like some people are apt to do.

Glad you didn't get hurt. If it had been an armadillo you'd of been screwed and they'd be having people for dinner Razz emoticon There's never a copy of the redneck recipes around when you need it Laughing emoticon You did the right thing by not trying to miss it and swerve. It's the deer and other large things we have to worry about and swerve. Even a very large turtle you couldn't hit it and come out unscathed. Having a large animal walking across the road on the backside of a curve has always been my worst nightmare Luckily the only thing that qualifies on my island are dogs and wild boar. Feral dogs are more common but boars you usually don't see but that said i saw a baby one cross Kam highway few weeks back.way out in front of me. Must be a lot of them this year. Hunters will be happy and there will many more luau's this coming year Be careful and thanks for sharing the squirrel story. Believe it or not i miss the pesky creatures They are cute and we don't have any here just mongoose.mice and rats for the little guys. My friend had a barn owl dive at him during the day once and it bounced hard off his helmet. The force caused him to move the bike a bit but he never lost control. Pretty bad when the wildlife is out to get us just like the cars Ride safe.

Killed a dog in my Golf in France, finished off a cat a few weeks earlier, totally mashed a pidgeon with the windshield a few weeks before that.

Years before that a deer ran straight out of a hedge and connected head first into the near side panels of the van I was driving.

The deer didn't come off very well.

Ran over a fox once, went under the front and back wheels, killed instantly. Also had a close shave with a deer galloping towards me along a dual carriageway many years ago. Now hitting that would've made a mess of us both...

I ran over a big ass snake on the scoot last week. I think a car had already gotten him first though but it was definitely still alive. I didn't notice cars swerving till the last minute. It looked kinda like a rattler so didn't freak out too much other than the fact his head was a foot from my ankle.

Good thing it wasn't an elk or moose. I woulda lost that contest.

Congratulations and thank you for reducing the number of the Vertebrate Alliance (Rodent Division) warriors. Up here we are engaged in a seemingly unending conflict with the V.A. No offense, but I hope our local insurgents send some additional fighters down your way to intensify their efforts there. The only good rodent is a dead rodent (well with the exception of guinea pigs and hampsters perhaps). It's also possible to bag a squirrel with a bicycle btw.

Redneck'n
Driving my pickup through Wyoming cowboy'n a couple summer ago, passed some rednecks on the right as they sat in the fast lane doing like 55, they caught up and followed directly in my blind spot for the next five miles. I had the Cruise control on and hadn't yet run out of jokes at their expense, but on up aways i saw a dead raccoon in the middle of the road- i knew what needed to be done n'order to shake'em off my tail... They didn't see it come'n... SQUISH That raccoon corpse cannon blasted a bucket load of bloat and guts all over their windshield like something out of a horror-comedy movie. They ended up in ball of dust someways south of the shoulder, their caddy plastered in half digested death. Hope the driver had his mouth open.

Hit a squirrel on the backside of Mt. Hamilton last year. That's common in Norcal, we call them suicide squirrels, they just dart out in front of everything. No sense in trying to swerve as the crazy rodent is bound to change direction back into your line.

I also was hit by a pigeon on my way home from work. He took off from a street corner, at a pretty low angle and whacked up against the side of my helmet. Thank goodness I rock a full face...
