ok, so I am planning to start taking some longer rides, and intend to record them. Any suggestions to which work better, or any specific model recommendations? For the camera guys, not real MODELS, I can figure that part out!

Planning on doing the White Sands Mayhem Rally in Pensacola, Fl and would like to record the trip. So I gotta get one soon.
Thanks all!

mounting the models
the real question here is, is it better to have the camera on the helmet, to get the p.o.v. of the rider, or mounted to scoot I guess for stability?

I don't know about the handlebar mount but I've just experimented with a few different spots to mount a camera. Check out my post. New video camera below ...

I would say as far as the camera is concerned, a helmet mount would be easier on the camera. Your body works as a much better shock absorber than the handlebars will. Though, there's a lot more ways to mount stuff to handlebars than to helmets.

I hate hate hate helmet-mounted video. The frequent head-checks make me extremely motion sick.

Hate!

Agreed, minus the motion sickness, but with double the hatred.

My two cents (if it's worth any) helmet cam is better than handlebar. Why? You have the option to look straight and left & right (however short). It's all about the editing. You don't have to show us the part where you constantly move your head (pan the camera) left to right. Cut those out. If you're up to it, you can turn your head to the side while you're still focusing on the road (you will just be turning your head, but not exactly moving your eyes away from the road). Practice. Or, you can go handheld like me

(shameless self-promo alert) Check out my videos for samples

I'd say scooter mounted, absolutely. The video is so much more watchable when it's stable while riding.

Why don't you try to get both? A scooter mount, and a helmet mount.

Check out my time lapse ride. Scooter mounted, but not really comparable to a real video:

The GoPro Hero Helmet mounted "Wide Angle" model works well. I bought one several weeks ago. You can purchase it in standard definition or in high definition. I bought the standard definition model and have no complaints. Some of the old stock that is still floating around will record on a 2gb SD card for 56 minutes but they offer a free download to increase the recording time to 112 minutes and the ability to use a 4gb SD card. Mine came out of the box with the 112 minute upgrade already installed. I bought mine for $139 including shipping (no tax) and a 4gb SD card for $137 from an online retailer. Some Costco stores have been selling this same model for $99 but they didn't have them at any of my local stores. Someone posted the display at a Costco where they were selling them and the packaging is totally different than the one I purchased so I don't know if it was the older model that simply needs the upgrade that may be downloaded or if they packaged them differently for Costco. I don't think (but I'm not positive) that the SD card is included with the Costco model. It was an extra cost item for the one I purchased. The camera is easy to operate. I have no problem with the helmet mount but Jess (owner of this site) has experimented with different mounting areas for his GoPro camera. The only thing that they should include for this camera is a small remote that you could mount/velcro to your handlebar area so you can turn the camera on/off and start/stop the recording without having to reach up and locate the small buttons while you're moving (or have to stop to do it).
