I'm adding a new rule to MV. Several, actually, but they all boil down to the same thing:

No lecturing
No telling people how to live their lives
No moral superiority
No ninnies

Examples:

OK: "I prefer full-face helmets"
Not OK: "You should always wear a full face helmet"

OK: "I don't ride with my pets"
Not OK: "You should never take your pets anywhere on your scooter"

OK: "I drive the speed limit"
Not OK: "You shouldn't speed"

We're adults. We make our own choices. We don't need anyone attempting to impose their choices on us any more than we need people imposing their religion or their politics on us. It is unwanted and unwelcome.

These new rules have always been in force, but not explicitly stated. I'm rectifying that here today.

Most of you don't know him, since he's strictly vintage only everything, but Alex T had one of the best dogs ever known to humanity. Unfortunately Mintaka recently (last week) passed away due to old age.

That dog (the size of an Australian shepherd) rode on the floorboard of a vintage scooter, in the pouring rain, from Annapolis to Rhode Island for a rally last year. That's a few hundred miles, in traffic, and yes, on the floorboard, and it wasn't a tiny dog either.

Mintaka had put more miles on those floorboards, in sidecars, and on El Coucho than most scooterists will ever put on their scooters in a lifetime. Mintaka lived to ride on Alex's scooters.

Not saying people should make their dogs ride with them, but if ever a dog was meant for scootering, it was Mintaka.

I think preaching in some cases is still good. If someone wants to drag their baby behind their scooter, can we say that they shouldn't? Laughing emoticon

I also think you need to add a rule that says that people won't take things personally. If someone asks for an opinion about what to wear and I say that I wear Toreador Pants, someone else is going to reply that I am trying to tell them, not the OP, what to do. I don't say people have to do this or that. I just say what I do. However, a lot of people get insecure and feel guilty, I suppose, so they assume that you are telling them what to do. So here's the additional rule that I propose.

"If someone says that they do something, it doesn't mean that they are telling you what to do. So lighten up."

You have to understand that I read these rules before I woke up, still drinking caffeinated Irish tea. The milk I added had too much blarney.

I thought it read as follows...."OK: I don't ride with my pants"

Maybe I should just sleep it off, after I wipe off the keyboard... Wha? emoticon

Actually, that would be a good example too Laughing emoticon We shouldn't be forcing our clothing-laden riding opinions on others. People should be able to wear what they want or not wear what they want while riding. However, I would think that could cause a nasty sunburn or uncomfortable chafing at the least

Nope. Let the local law enforcement agency deal with it.

As long as you're stating it as your own personal preference, it's fine. If someone takes offense at that, they're being a ninny.

I wouldn't be so sure about this?
I frequently use "you" and "your" or "you're" because it's grammatically easier to deal with than "one" or "people" and "said scooter rider." Maybe I'm a douche too, but it just seems easiest in hypothetical situations, such as in this post i made yesterday,

"I think the techy is right about these kinds of passes, but it's not cross traffic that'll kill you (unless the guys from fast and furious are on the lines ready to blow up) it's the oncoming dude who's planning to make a left in front of you on the yellow. He's not planning on anyone sneaking around the car you were passing at the last minute, and since he only see's the car across the way (the one u passed) who's about to do the inverse 'yellow left,' he'll probably go as soon as the light starts to change,"

This is already confusing and possibly poorly written, but by using "you" i don't have to continually describe the main character of this hypothetical. I'm trying to warn others about these types of impending traffic situations, using "i" and "me" sounds ineffectual. It's not really a lecture either, just a situation we're all bound to face - or am i lecturing and being self-centered by assuming it will or has happened to most scooter riders? doubt it.

-I'm not lecturing here either, although maybe i am being a small breasted woman for complaining about the grammatical difficulties i'm going to be facing if i want to keep weighing in on the "hot" MV posts we've been having lately...

Talking down to others or trying to belittle them is certainly small and inappropriate. The problem with your "rules", however, is that people actually often post their opinions to influence others. When you disagree with someone online, it is not generally because you expect them to do things differently - it is because you think it is misleading or incomplete advise for others - usually inexperienced riders. Obviously we will all play by your rules as it is your sandbox - I don't, however, think it is that simple.

I'm sure Jess knows full well it isn't that simple - but over the last few years there have been some persistent 'preachers' who have resulted in innumerable complaints to the Mods - and frankly we're fed up with those automatic complaint PMs and the 'preachers' themselves, who get on my tits every sodding time.

So Jess is merely sending notice that the holier-than-thou brigade can please go and play in their own sandpit, not his/ours. Fuck-em. I bet they obey every single double-yellow as well. Bad rules beget bad behaviour - so we need to lay down the good rules here if some folk don't 'get it' seemingly in Internet life as well as Real Life.

It is so sad that these sort of 'rools' have to spelt out to some people - they obviously have eff-all social graces - ah - perhaps they never go into pubs or bars where these inter-personal guidelines become second nature. So sod-em times two!

Lurches off stage left muttering about god-botherers, who are a current plague around here...

Agreed.

But, I also agree with the sentiment of the new rules, it's just that the vaguery and personal perception in application of said rules will be a tough one. I always felt the best forum rules are the black and white bits that don't suffer generally from (mis)interpretation. These new digs are not going to be easily administered and moderated, IMHO. Still...I will do the my level best to walk the line...

Thanks for the clarification. As a relative newbie, I'm sometimes reluctant to provide my two cents (for whatever it may be worth) as I'm fearful of the textual tongue-lashing that may result. The vast majority of folks on these boards are so helpful, but there are a few out there that just make you go "huh?".
Hopefully, they'll take your words to heart!
