I'm sure Jess knows full well it isn't that simple - but over the last few years there have been some persistent 'preachers' who have resulted in innumerable complaints to the Mods - and frankly we're fed up with those automatic complaint PMs and the 'preachers' themselves, who get on my tits every sodding time.
Let me get this straight . . .

On a (presumably) adult forum about scooters, you have to deal with PM's from tattletales who have had their feelings hurt?

Jeez.

Whatever happened to telling the bully to STFU?

Agreed. It's not always black and white or simple. By far the hardest thing about running a forum is setting policy, and coming up with the rhyme and reason why one thing is okay and another (seemingly similar) thing is not. And then convincing everyone of why they're different. Aieeee!

That said, there's a simple rule of thumb to apply here: If one is expressing an opinion about one's own preferences, all is fine. If one is insisting in any way that everyone else should believe as they do, then they've crossed the line into lecturing. "Moral superiority" is much harder to define, of course, and so I doubt we'll call anyone on it unless they're especially egregious about it.

This is going to be very difficult for me as by profession I am a paid lecturer/guidance counselor/life coach who endorses a philanthropic bio-ethical lifestyle.

And I am flat chested.

Actually, that would be a good example too Laughing emoticon We shouldn't be forcing our clothing-laden riding opinions on others. People should be able to wear what they want or not wear what they want while riding. However, I would think that could cause a nasty sunburn or uncomfortable chafing at the least
I know a guy in Memphis who rides his Vespa wearing his kilt. Nice guy, a member of the Dead Elvises in Kilts club. Don't tell them they have to wear pants... R

Good rules in my humble newbie opinion. I have always hated it when someone posts a picture of themselves on their scooter and the first comment is, "You better wear your gear before you ride, not just the t-shirt you have on!" I am firmly in Jimc's camp on this one.

I'd just like to point out for the record that this post was from last August. The rules are still good ones, but the context is now different, which makes this particular post seem somewhat odd.

Oh well.

Most of you don't know him, since he's strictly vintage only everything, but Alex T had one of the best dogs ever known to humanity. Unfortunately Mintaka recently (last week) passed away due to old age.

That dog (the size of an Australian shepherd) rode on the floorboard of a vintage scooter, in the pouring rain, from Annapolis to Rhode Island for a rally last year. That's a few hundred miles, in traffic, and yes, on the floorboard, and it wasn't a tiny dog either.

Mintaka had put more miles on those floorboards, in sidecars, and on El Coucho than most scooterists will ever put on their scooters in a lifetime. Mintaka lived to ride on Alex's scooters.

Not saying people should make their dogs ride with them, but if ever a dog was meant for scootering, it was .

RIP
one of the coolest dogs i have ever known, and the only dog (that i know of) to do the scooter cannonball (2004) - albeit in the sag wagon.

how sad.

If you'll look at the first post, you'll see it's not entirely new.

The only way one would be at a loss for words as a result of this rule is if their entire contribution to the forum consists solely of telling other people how to live their lives. I'll leave it as an exercise of each individual to decide if that applies to them or not.

OK: "I don't ride with my pets"
Not OK: "You should never take your pets anywhere on your scooter"

OK: "I drive the speed limit"

We're adults. We make our own choices. We don't need anyone attempting to impose their choices on us any more than we need people imposing their religion or their politics on us. It is unwanted and unwelcome.

These new rules have always been in force, but not explicitly stated. I'm rectifying that here today.

It's actually a benevolent dictatorship. And some would quibble over my usage of "benevolent".

I respectfully disagree with the "new" rules. I may not agree
with the preaching crowd, but I also know how to ignore them
when I want to(some forums have an ignore user button).
Obviously, rules are needed to create a
environment that's conducive to a civil exchange of ideas.
Knowing that this is a Forum filled with so many
different opinions, and ideas, I think that's what creates
a community that has color, and diversity.

At first I didn't like the Karma idea, but I do see and
understand how that lets the community(as a whole) decide
what they think of someone, and how they post. I do still
think that is akin to a scarlet letter, but understand
the thought process.

I think when you sterilize a conversation, eliminating
the "better than thou", and the "worse than thou" you
create something thats wrong....even if I disagree
with them.

I do respect that this is Jess's Forum, and I can always
go somewhere else.

Since nobody else has said it, I'm glad I did.

Frankly I find anyone who uses those sort of terms a real turn-off. This place isn't 'sterilised', it just up-front ignores evangelists - who as a proven (history anyone?) type tend to induce bloodshed of one sort or another.

And anyone who disagrees with me can eff-orf. Razz emoticon

Locking, since everybody seems quick to judge and slow to notice that this is actually an old thread. It might not seem that long ago, but the context has changed sufficiently in that span of time, and this thread is now out of place.

Time to sink back into obscurity...
