IMHO, this was all set up by poor technique. At :04 you can see that he is leaning his body toward the outsideof the curve, causing the scooter to lean farther to the inside. This is slow-speed technique. At speed, he needed to lean his body toward the inside, keeping the scooter more upright.
At :09 it looks like he was starting to swing wide on the turn. You can hear him immediately roll off the throttle. I can't tell if he's trying to brake, but I'll bet he was. It seems that he was attempting to countersteer at that point, but he had no lean left on the scooter - note the upright body position again. He put his foot down to try to keep the scooter up and you can hear the bottom of the footbed scrape on the pavement. The rear wheel immediately loses traction and down he goes. In the slo-mo repeat at :39 you can hear the scraping start (eery sound in slo-mo) at the same instant his foot touches down. If you look at the bottom of the scooter you can see what looks like a scrape on the right underside of the scooter as well. At least he was wearing a good helmet. It took quite a knock on the guardrail. |

Definitely poor technique.
This is actually Mulholland Hwy, which is different from Mulholland Dr. They're both fun routes, but Mulholland Hwy is a bit more technical and challenging. The video is at the end of a section knows as "The Snake." I was riding up there just last weekend. Photographers set up in this area because it's where the sportbikers like to put themselves to the test. A lot of people show off in this stretch because they know they're being filmed or photographed. (Some companies post pics and vids and sell them to riders.) A lot of people crash up there and many aren't as lucky as this bozo. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mulholland+snake+crash&aq=f |

SALLAD that's why Mario doesn't ride his vespa out there We have a similar road and we call it snake road. I'd give the real name but you can't pronounce it. It's one of the main ways out of where i live. Full of twisties and going uphill you have only a cheap fence between you and a huge ravine for a good section of it:shock: Accidents on that road=death. I only know of one person who has crashed who actually lived

Anyone visiting LA with some spare time should come for a ride up there!
Last weekend, we went up with Modern Buddy members from San Diego (up for Swerve 'n' Curve) and Virginia (just happened to be in town; rented scoots). This is how you do it on a scooter! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The last rider in the heavy lean is the one local who knew where the camera would be set up, ha. They didn't get me on camera that day. Must have been going to fast. It's beautiful up there. My pics from that ride: http://www.flickr.com/photos/82788703@N00/sets/72157624741917256/ |

That spot 'The Snake,' is a bike eater without. I think its off camber and lumpy and eliminates your usual lean angle.
There are a TON of videos of incidents there |

If I'm ever in LA I'm definitely going to make time for a ride. For all the wrecks on YouTube it still looks like a great ride.
Judy, yes Mario would have problems out there... ![]() |

When I saw the advertising at the bottom of the image I first thought that the incident was staged.
Eric put me straight. |

BLUCLOUD no it's one of the roads heading down from schofield barracks to the waialua/mokuleia area. Tantalus is a fun ride. We did it this spring. It's on Honolulu side.

Back in the early 1980s, I got nailed on Mulholland Drive in a rented Alfa roadster. I was there on a TV shoot, and found a recently repaved section near Laurel Canyon. Did a few laps before a black-and-white got behind me and put an end to my fun.

That guy is lucky he didn't get cut in 1/2 on the guard rail. Several of my friends saw the same exact accident happen with much more horrific results with one of their friends on a sport-bike.
![]() Those guardrails can act like a cheese-grater on a human body. BTW it looks like his center-stand touched down and lifted the rear tire causing the wreck. Something I too easily did on a Buddy myself last year. |

After I watched the clip I started watching all the other crashes on utube. Man you cant beat dumb. I am interested if any of the camera operators on Mullholland are selling the pics to insurance companies. At home they go to the track and photograph licence plates of cars and bikes participating in track days. It voids vehicle warranties and insurance policies and insurance companies pay for the pics.

As far as I know, there are no "stupid/irresponsible behavior" clauses in insurance policies. As common as the video collection makes these Mulholland bike crashes seem, every day there are thousands of auto accidents due to distracted drivers (using a cell handset or texting while driving is illegal here but that doesn't deter anyone) or drivers behaving stupidly. Same goes for motorcyclists. If some squid is riding too fast and goes down, his insurance pays. Track days are something else altogether. For instance, I'm sure if someone crashes (knock wood) during the upcoming scooter land speed record trials, they won't be covered because they're participating in an organized racing/sporting event beyond the intended coverage of insurance. |
