My son is about to get his motorcycle learners permit which will allow him to ride within sight of me. I'd like to get us both headsets so I can let him know about upcoming dangers, potholes, etc. Just trying to be as safe as possible as he starts out. Anyone have any that you've used? Ones to avoid? We'll probably be on vintage scoots, so engine noise might be a factor. Any you can provide is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm a personal fan of the autocom systems. They are actually discontinued due to financial problems but the product is good. You can get a good unit on ebay for cheap. Most all their units allow battery power so engine noise is not an issue. I have one on my gsxr, one on my BMW and a 3rd that rotates ownership between my wifes bike and one of my scoots.

The plus of the autocom is how expandable they are. I have my iPod, radar detector and gps all audio wired into the system - along with bike to bike.

I found a chatterbox that retails for $279 in a clearance box at cycle gear for $5. The tag said it was missing the helmet bracket - i guess they didn't look under the foam. so i tried this one out for a bit in a race car i built but decided i like autocom better - most likely since i use to them.

The major plus for the chatterbox us that it is an all in one unit. Meaning it has rider to passenger capabilities along with bike to bike. If you go auto com you have to buy an additional frs or gmrs radio. I do recommend the gmrs version of chatterbox if you go that route.

Now having said all that i say don't get them. A new rider has enough things to concentrate on and deal with and you unexpectedly yelling into his helmet can be very distracting. I suggest working on a good set of hand signals to communicate.

I go on an annual motorcycle ride that consists of approximate 40 bikes and 1500 miles. These are all twisty roads and very very fast riders. As well everyone uses headsets (primarily autocom). I have ridden for 20 years and i find it very distracting to unexpectedly have someone talk about something in the road as im going through turns. If they saw it - im sure ill see it. Just a thought - i think he should just get use to the road and the sound of the bike.
